Abstract: A system is provided for producing a shielded connector assembly (14) for connecting a round multiconductor cable (24) to a complementary connector (16) having a flat array of terminals. The cable includes a plurality of insulated conductors (22) within a cable shield (26) and surrounded by an outer insulating jacket (28) which is stripped to expose the cable shield and the insulated conductors. An insulating housing (16) has a receptacle (52) for receiving the insulated conductors (22) in a flat array. A plurality of terminals (20) are provided for termination to the received conductors (22) and for mating with the terminals of the complementary connector. A conductive connector shield (18) is mounted on and about a portion of the insulating housing (16), with a portion of the shield extending into the receptacle (52). A round conductive crimp ferrule (30) is positioned over the round multiconductor cable (24) in engagement with the exposed cable shield (26) and with the exposed insulated conductors (22) projecting from an end of the crimp ferrule. The exposed insulated conductors are sorted and positioned in a flat array. The round conductive crimp ferrule (30) is crimped into a generally flat configuration onto the cable (24) for holding the conductors (22) in their flat array within the receptacle (52) of the housing (16) for termination to the terminals (30), and with the crimped ferrule in engagement with the shield portion (18) in the receptacle.

Abstract: A method is disclosed for terminating a coaxial connector (10) to a coaxial cable (12). The coaxial connector has an elongated signal pin surrounded in part by an insulating jacket (16) and an elongated shield member (18) surrounding the insulating jacket while the coaxial cable has a signal wire (27) surrounded by an inner insulating member (28), ground means (34, 34) surrounding the insulating jacket and an outer insulating sheath (32) surrounding the ground means. The method includes providing an elongated conductive shield member having a front portion (54) and a rear portion (56). The front portion of the shield member is secured onto the insulating jacket surrounding the signal pin whereby a portion of the signal pin is positioned within the rear portion. The ground means is electrically and mechanically bonded to the rear portion of the shield member. The signal wire is then electrically and mechanically bonded to an exposed portion of the signal pin within the rear portion of the shield member while the signal pin is held by the shield member. The rear portion of the shield member is then closed around the bonded portions of the signal wire and the ground means.

The round conductive crimp ferrule (30) is crimped into a generally flat configuration onto the cable (24) for holding the conductors (22) in their flat array within the receptacle (52) of the housing (16) for termination to the terminals (30), and with the crimped ferrule in engagement with the shield portion (18) in the receptacle.

Abstract: A plate member (12) has a wire engaging edge (14) and a corresponding number of open-ended wire guide channels (16), each extending inwardly from the edge (14) to a closed end (20) spaced apart by a centerline spacing (Y) different from the centerline spacing X of the the open ends (18) in said edge (14). The plate (12) is reciprocably moveable between a first position wherein the open ends (18) are in surrounding engagement with the wires (22) (see Fig. 1) adjacent the edge (14) and a second wire-receiving position wherein said wires (22) are disposed at the closed ends (20) (see Fig. 2). In use of the guides actuation means, e.g. machine table (138) (see Fig. 6) moves the plate member (12) between said first and second positions. Actuation of the guide causes movement of the wires (22) within their respective channels (16) to alter the centerline spacing thereof. The guide is useful for making smooth continuous transitions between production runs of different pitch wire harnesses. It is also useful for making pitch transition wire harnesses (92) (as shown in Fig. 5) wherein a common group of wires (22) are terminated to at least two connectors (94, 100), each one containing terminals (102, 116) spaced apart at different centerline spacings.
