Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the efficiency of a power amplifier used in a wireless communication device. SOLUTION: Load impedance at the output of a power amplifier 304 is modified by a voltage variable capacitor (VVC) 310 to maximize the efficiency of the power amplifier. A comparator 509 generates an amplifier control signal 211 based upon a detected power output signal 216 and a reference signal. In addition to providing power control, the control signal is also coupled to a VVC circuit 506 to control the output impedance of the power amplifier. In an alternate embodiment, a separate VVC control signal 527 can be coupled to the VVC. The second VVC is coupled in parallel to the first VVC. Otherwise, the VVC circuit 506 is incorporated at the input of the power amplifier to compensate for variations in input impedance to improve other power amplifier parameters such as IM, gain, output power and noise level. Abstract: A unique method and apparatus modifies the load impedance at the output of a power amplifier by varying a voltage variable capacitor (VVC) (310) to maximize the efficiency of the power amplifier (304). A comparator (509) generates amplifier control signal (211) based upon a detected power output signal (216) and a reference signal. In addition to providing power control, the control signal is also coupled to a VVC circuit (506) to control the output impedance of the power amplifier. In an alternate embodiment, a separate VVC control signal (527) based upon a comparison of the power control signal and the battery voltage is coupled to a VVC. In another alternate embodiment, a second VVC can be coupled in parallel to the first VVC. The second VVC is preferably controlled by a signal (805) based upon the current in the power amplifier. Finally, an alternate embodiment incorporates a VVC circuit (506) at the input of the power amplifier to compensate for variations in input impedance to improve other power amplifier parameters such as IM, gain, output power and noise level.

Abstract: A dual drain control uses a variable voltage supply on the drains of a first stage (302) and a second stage (304) to control the output power. In particular, dual drain control having a 1:1 ratio is employed at lower power levels, with single drain control at higher power levels. Such drain control could use signals from a microprocessor, or a specific circuit (203) to generate the drain voltages based upon a control voltage. Use in a cellular telephone is described. The efficiency is improved.

Abstract: A power amplifier load adjust system includes a power amplifier and a variable impedance network coupled to the output of the power amplifier. The variable impedance network presents a plurality of impedances to the output of the power amplifier responsive to a load control signal. A control circuit generates a transmit power command and a channel frequency command. Memory stores a plurality of control values as a function of output power and frequency. A processing circuit coupled to the variable impedance network, the control circuit, and the memory retrieves the plurality of control values and uses them to generate the load control signal in response to the transmit power command and the channel frequency command.

Abstract: A power amplifier load adjust system (200) includes a power amplifier (32) and a variable impedance network (36) coupled to the output of the power amplifier (32). The variable impedance network (36) presents a plurality of impedances to the output of the power amplifier (32) responsive to a load control signal. A control circuit generates a transmit power command and a channel frequency command. Memory (40) stores a plurality of control values as a function of output power and frequency. A processing circuit (38) coupled to the variable impedance network (36), the control circuit (20), and the memory (40) retrieves the plurality of control values and uses them to generate the load control signal in response to the transmit power command and the channel frequency command.
