    Abstract: A compact, bright and high-performance viewing optical system and an image display apparatus using the same. The viewing optical system uses an ocular optical system, which is formed from a decentered prism, and a reflection type image display device (203) forming a first image to be viewed by an observer. The image display device (203) has a light source (204) and an illuminating light guide prism (206) for guiding a light beam from the light source so that the light beam is applied to the display surface from the front side thereof. The ocular optical system includes a prism having an entrance surface (213) through which a light beam reflected from the display surface enters the prism after passing through the illuminating light guide prism (206). The prism (210) further has a reflecting surface (212) and an exit surface (211) through which the light beam exits from the prism. The reflecting surface (212) is decentered with respect to the optical axis and has a rotationally asymmetric curved surface configuration that corrects decentration aberrations due to the decentration of the reflecting surface (212) and gives a power to the light beam. The viewing optical system further includes a see-through optical element (220) so as to lead a second image, such as from the outside world, to the observer's eye. The curved reflecting surface (212) of the prism (210) has a transmitting action to allow a light beam from the second image to enter the ocular optical system after passing through the see-through optical element. The combined optical power and the combined angular magnification of the ocular optical system and the see-through optical element are arranged so that the outside world or the like can be seen in the same way as with the naked eye.
