Abstract: PURPOSE: To optically judge whether a product has an acceptance external form or not by dividing the image of a product surface into plural sections, allocating numeric values to the respective sections in accordance with optical characteristics and comparing the product image with a discrimination reference image. CONSTITUTION: A two dimensional image is obtained by a video camera 24 and an image pickup unit 26A. A processor 26 secondarily divides the image into plural sections. Numerical values are allocated to the respective secondary sections in accordance with the optical characteristics of the secondary sections. The plural reference images are generated from a reference product and the discrimination image is extracted. The threshold of a permission deviation from the discrimination image is set for the actual product whose appearance is judged. Then, the image of the actual product is generated and the obtained product image is compared with the discrimination image. The actual product whose deviation from the discrimination image is larger than the threshold is judged to have the appearance which is not acceptable. Thus, automatic adaptability to new inspection contents is realized with versatility without the need of complicated setting work by a highly experienced worker.

Abstract: The acceptability of the appearance of objects (12) such as consumer products is determined by forming an initial discriminant function (F) as a composite of a relatively small number of images (I) which are known to be acceptable. This initial discriminant function is then used to gather statistical information (P, A, B, C) about how a first relatively large number of images compare to the initial discriminant function. Thereafter, this statistical information is used (318-324) to select or aid in the selection of acceptable images from a second relatively large number of images, and the images selected as acceptable are used (334) to refine the discriminant function. The refined discriminant function is then used (e.g., during actual product inspection (402-414)) to determine which objects have an acceptable appearance and which do not.

Abstract: Images such as product images are identified as substantially similar to one or more reference images by finding pixels which have substantially the same value or values in all or substantially all of the reference images. Image erosion and/or dilation may be used in processing the reference image data to help identify pixels which can always be expected to have the same value in all acceptable images. The values associated with the corresponding pixels in a product image are combined and compared to an expected value. The product image is identified as substantially similar to the reference image or images only if the combined values from the product image compare favorably with the expected value.
