The pellets are loaded into a chamber for inclusion in a smoking article as a flavour generator.

Abstract: A wet blend containing tobacco particles and a binder is extruded under conditions such that steam is generated within the material upon extrusion and effects foaming. To minimize the amount of water used, which may subsequently have to be dried off, the binder is pre-hydrated by mixing with water before being mixed with the tobacco particles. To improve the consistency of the hydrated binder a small proportion of tobacco particles can be mixed with the binder before hydration or part of the binder can be mixed dry with the tobacco particles, leaving an excess of water for admixture with the rest of the binder.

Abstract: A continuous rod 20 of foamed tobacco-containing material is delivered by extruder barrel 13 which is fed with tobacco from supply 7, binder from supply 8, and water from supply 11. To enable the rod 20 to be fed directly to a cigarette-making machine 4 it is first dried by passage through microwave driers 2, volatile materials being removed by vacuum hood 25. Rod 20 then passes along conveyor 6 and is cooled by refrigerated air driven by fan 16. The surface temperature is reduced below the bulk temperature, which has a case-hardening and stiffening effect.

Abstract: Tobacco from supply 7 and binder from 8 with water from 11 are extruded as a continuous rod 20, foamed by vaporisation of the water. The rod 20 is dried by micro-wave heating in chambers 2 and air-cooled in chamber 3 before passing to a cigarette-making machine 4. Between the drying chambers 2 and the cooling chamber 3 ( or after the latter) a powdery material is applied to the surface of the rod by a powder box 30 and wiper 31. The powdery material may be a flavorant, a filler or other material to modify the characteristics of the cigarette. Applied to a sticky surface it also facilitates further processing.
