Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mixer circuit for converting a differential current signal into a single-ended signal. SOLUTION: Many applications require the conversion of a differential current signal into a single-ended signal. The shortcomings encountered with existing approaches include poor conversion efficiency, limited bandwidth, and large size. A disclosed converter uses active devices to obtain a unit of small size and high efficiency having a wide bandwidth of operation. COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a radio frequency amplifier with improved linearity and minimal third-order distortion.SOLUTION: An amplifier 10' includes a first transistor Q1, and a linearization circuit 14' that has first and second terminals. The first terminal of the linearization circuit is connected to a common terminal of the transistor Q1, and the second terminal is connected to an input terminal of the transistor Q1. The linearization circuit has a low gain and high output impedance at first frequency of a first signal supplied to the circuit and a second frequency of a second signal supplied to the circuit, and a unity gain and low output impedance at the difference frequency between the first and second frequencies.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a temperature stabilized voltage-controlled oscillator.SOLUTION: An integrated circuit voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) in a battery-powered device, such as cellular phone, can be configured to tune across a fairly wide frequency range by using a relatively narrow control voltage range. The frequency response of the VCO can be temperature compensated, by applying a temperature variable voltage source to varactors 310a, 310b that form part of a VCO resonant circuit. The reference ends of the varactors can be supplied with a temperature-dependent voltage source 370, 380 that has a temperature dependence that substantially compensates for the varactor temperature dependence. The temperature-dependent voltage source 370, 380 can be a proportional to absolute temperature (PTAT) device. The VCO includes a CMOS oscillator manufactured on the substrate, an LC resonant tank on the substrate and at least a pair of varactors 310a, 310b, 320a, 320b having a common anode connection.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To cancel second-order or third-order nonlinearity of a transistor, without depending on the temperature variation or on the manufacturing process drift. SOLUTION: Mathematically, nonlinearity can be represented by a sum of multiple components where some components have negative sign. The components are proportional to DC currents of a transistor at bias voltages which differ by small amounts. Each bias transistor generates a DC current representing one of the components. A feedback circuit senses the DC signal and generates the bias voltage of the bias transistor that makes the DC signal zero. One of the bias voltages is applied to a main transistor, and as a result, the selected nonlinearity is cancelled. COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a distortion at a low level without increasing DC power consumption. SOLUTION: An amplifier includes a first transistor having first, second and third terminals with the first terminal being an input terminal and the second terminal being the output terminal and the third terminal being a common terminal. The amplifier includes a linearization circuit having first and second terminals. The first terminal of the linearization circuit is connected to the common terminal of the transistor and the second terminal is connected to the input terminal of the transistor. In a specific embodiment, the linearization circuit is implemented as a unity gain buffer with an input terminal connected to the common terminal of the transistor and an output terminal connected to the input terminal of the transistor. Abstract:
A self-biased voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) that includes a VCO core including a plurality of switching transistors, a resonant tank circuit operatively coupled to the VCO core, a current source operatively coupled to the VCO core for supplying a bias current to the VCO core, and a biasing circuit operatively coupled to both the resonant tank circuit and to the current source. The biasing circuit and the switching transistors of the VCO core cooperatively function to bias the current source, whereby the VCO is self-biased.
