Abstract: RCA 73,432 In a color television receiver including a comb filter for separating luminance and chrominance components of a color television signal, a network is included for enhancing vertical image detail to enhance vertical resolution in the luminance content of a displayed image. The comb filter provides a combed luminance signal output from which vertical detail signal information has been unavoidably deleted, and a combed chrominance signal output including signal frequency components representative of the deleted detail signal, which are selectively extracted from the combed chrominance signal. Low level detail signals are restored to the combed luminance signal via a first signal processing network which exhibits a prescribed signal restoration gain. The detail signal is also added to the combed luminance signal via a second network which cores (removes) low level detail signals including noise in a first operating mode, and amplifies higher level detail signals to enhance vertical image definition in a second mode. Rapid transitions from the coring to the enhancement mode are undesirably manifested in a displayed diagonal image as serrations along the edge of the diagonal line. The visible effects of the serrations are reduced to an acceptable minimum by low pass filtering the enhanced cored detail signal before being added to the combed luminance signal.

Abstract: The stereophonic sound synthesizer utilizes a phase splitter in the form of a transformer (20) to develop two oppositely phased audio signals, (A,B) from an applied monaural signal (M). One (A) of the two oppositely phased signals is applied to a transfer function circuit (30,40,50) of the form H(s), which modulates the intensity of a monaural signal as a function of the frequency. The intensity modulated H(s) signal may be applied to via an output (92) an amplifier for subsequent amplification and reproduction. The H(s) signal is also combined in a passive combining circuit (72, 74) with the other (B) of the two oppositely phase signals to produce at an output (94) a difference signal H(s) + M' which is the complement of the H(s) signal. The difference signal may be applied to an amplifier for subsequent amplification and reproduction. No differential amplifier is necessary to producer the difference signal because the necessary selective phase opposition of the signals combined in that transformer output signals. The synthesizer is especially applicable for use in a television receiver in which the transformer (20) electrically isolates the television's electrical system from the stereo synthesizer system's signal outputs, which may thus be applied to an external stereo amplifier safely.

Abstract: TELEVISION SIGNAL PROCESSING APPARATUS Signal delaying means, included in the luminance channel of a color television receiver, are responsive to the television video signal processed in the receiver. A portion of the signal delaying means serves to equalize the time delays of signals processed in the chrominance and the luminance channels of the receiver. A plurality of differently delayed video signals are developed at signal coupling means associated with the signal delaying means. Two of the delayed video signals, spaced apart in time by a predetermined interval inversely related to a frequency at which it is desired to relatively attenuate the video signals, are combined to produce a signal to control the peaking characteristics of the luminance channel. At least one other of the delayed video signals is used to produce a signal which is combined with the peaking controlling signal to control the bandwidth characteristics of the luminance channel. Additional means may be provided to allow the amplitude of the output signal derived by combining the peaking and bandwidth controlling signals to be controlled so that signals processed in the luminance channel may be either peaked or depeaked, depending on the quality of the incoming video signals.

Abstract: AUTOMATIC PEAKING APPARATUS Signal delaying means are coupled to a source of television video signals. A plurality of signal coupling means are coupled to the signal delaying means for developing a plurality of delayed video signals. At least a first and a second of the delayed video signals, spaced apart in time by a time interval substantially equal to NT/2, where T is the period of a signal component of the video signals and N is an integer greater than one, are combined to form a combined signal. A bandwidth determining signal is derived from at least a third of the delayed video signals spaced in time between the first and second delayed video signals. A peak response determining signal is derived by further combining the combined signal and the bandwidth determining signal. The amplitude of the peak response determining signal is controlled as a function of a control signal. In illustrative embodiments the apparatus is utilized to provide automatic luminance channel peaking and automatic color or chroma control (ACC).
