[Also in Division G2] In a photographic method of printing the multicolour phosphor dot screen of a 3-gun shadow-mask television display tube by exposure to light through the apertures of the shadow mask, a lens having a stepped profile is interposed between the mask and the source of light to allow for the degrouping of the electron spots which arises under dynamic convergence of the electron beams in the operation of the tube. Due to the discontinuities of the boundaries between the stepped zones, a pair of complementary lenses may be interposed successively, each lens having half the total number of annular stepped zones and the boundaries between the zones being coated to render them opaque to the light beam. The coating may be applied either by evaporation or by a photographic technique. A further lens of the type described in Specification 823,385 and having a curved profile is also interposed in the light beam to correct for the radial misregister between the electron spots and the phosphor dot trials.

    Abstract: 823,385. Colour television tubes. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Jan. 25, 1956 [Feb. 1, 1955], No. 2498/56. Class 39(1). The mosaic-patterned luminescent screen of an apertured mask colour tube is produced photographically using an optical system or lens which directs light rays along the same paths as are followed by the beam electrons of the C.R.T. The separated face plate 3 of a 3- gun shadow mask tube is coated with a photographic emulsion containing a phosphor e.g. red luminescing zinc phosphate/manganese. The apertured mask 7 is supported on the side wall 1 by pins 9 and the assembly mounted on a pedestal 13, protuberances 19 in the sealing flange 21 and corresponding V-grooves in the pedestal top coacting to level and centre the screen unit. A correcting lens 25 is positioned between the screen and the light source, the latter comprising a box 23 on a turntable or turret 27, a spring loaded plunger 29 engaging holes 31 in the rim of the turret to locate the point light A of the system in the desired positions corresponding to the three electron guns. A tapered light conduit 35 of high refractive index e.g. quartz conveys ultra violet rays from the lamp 33 to the point A. The function and design of the lens 25 necessary to bend the light rays to the angle which simulates the electron path are described in the Specification.
