    Abstract: A local oscillator is arranged in a Colpitts type configuration in which an amplifying device such as a bipolar transistor or field effect transistor having a control electrode (base or gate electrode) is coupled to a first electrode (emitter or source electrode) defining the end of a conduction channel through an oscillation conditioning network for conditioning the device to oscillate in a given range and also to a frequency determining network including a first varactor diode responsive to the tuning voltage and an inductance element coupled in series between the control electrode and signal ground, and in which the output is taken at a second electrode (collector or drain) defining the other end of the conduction channel. A range extending circuit including a second varactor diode responsive to the tuning voltage is coupled between the control electrode and signal ground for ensuring that the oscillator operates reliably at both ends of the tuning range.

    Abstract: A multiplier for multiplying the modulated sound and picture carriers to produce an intercarrier sound signal in a quasi-parallel sound channel of an IF section has a pair of anti-parallel connected diodes in a limiter for generating an amplitude limited version of the picture carrier. It has been discovered that the varying capacitance of the diodes with picture amplitude can cause phase shifts and hence phase modulation interference in the intercarrier signal. The latter is especially troublesome for stereo sound reproduction. To reduce such interference, a low value resistor is shunt coupled to the diodes to inhibit the capacitance variations of the diodes and resulting undesired phase modulation in the intercarrier sound signal.

    Abstract: In a double conversion tuner intended to tune UHF broadcast channels as well as VHF broadcast and cable channels, the frequency range of the first intermediate signal produced by the first mixer is selected to correspond to that of UHF channel 37. The frequency range of UHF channel 37 is reserved for radio astronomy and is, therefore, not used for the broadcast of television information.     Abstract: The IF section of a television receiver includes an amplifier having an input terminal for receiving an IF signal and an output terminal at which an amplified version of the IF signal is developed and a SAW filter having two input terminals for receiving the amplified IF signal, one of the input terminals being connected to AC signal ground and having an output terminal for providing a modified IF signal having a bandpass characteristic determined by the SAW filter. An impedance transformation network is coupled between the output terminal of the amplifier and the input terminal of the SAW filter for increasing the effective load impedance of the amplifier and for decreasing the output impedance of the drive arrangement. The former aspect of the impedance transformation network allows a transistor with lower current supplying capabilities to be employed. The latter aspect of the impedance transformation network tends to reduce undesired voltages developed in response to reflections between the transducers of the SAW filter. Specifically, the impedance transformation network includes an inductor connected between the output terminal of the amplifier and the AC signal ground, a capacitor connected between the output terminal of the amplifier and the input terminal of the SAW filter and a resistor connected between the input terminal of the SAW filter and the AC signal ground. Desirably, the capacitance of the capacitor is in the same order of magnitude as the input capacitance of the SAW filter and the inductance of the inductor is selected to provide a resonance with the effective capacitance in the passband.

    Abstract: RCA 74,057 A selectivity network is provided for a synchronous detector, a reference signal circuit, and an AFT circuit. The selectivity network comprises a first tuned circuit coupled across two terminals of the reference signal circuit and tuned to the desired frequency of the I.F. picture carrier. A second tuned circuit is lightly coupled to the first tuned circuit and is coupled across two inputs of the AFT circuit to provide a frequency dependent phase-shifted reference signal to the AFT circuit. The first tuned circuit includes a trap circuit tuned to provide attenuation about a frequency intermediate the frequency of a sound carrier and that picture signal sideband frequency which, upon detection, results in a video signal corresponding to the intercarrier sound second subharmonic frequency. The trap in the reference signal tuned circuit minimizes quadrature distortion in the reference channel and the resultant harmonic distortion in the video signals, which causes sound buzz. The frequency notched reference signal is applied to the AFT tuned circuit, which causes a balancing of the pull-in range of the AFT circuit about the desired picture carrier frequency, thereby immunizing the AFT circuit against noise-pulling. The frequency notch in the AFT circuit at the indicated frequency also minimizes AFT effects of a frequency offset co-channel sound carrier, allowing the automatic acquisition of signals which are offset in frequency toward the lower adjacent channel.
