Abstract: An automatic gain control arrangement is provided for an analog to digital (A/D) converter in a television signal processing system. A gain-controlled source of analog signals applies a video information signal to the input of an A/D converter. The A/D converter produces digitized video signal samples at an output which is coupled to a digital peak detector. The digital peak detector detects the level of the digital samples of the synchronizing signal components. The detected sync signal level is compared with a desired value or range of values. If the detected sync signal level is not at the desired level or is outside the desired range, the count of a counter is incremented or decremented accordingly. The count of the counter is converted to an analog voltage which is applied to the gain-controlled signal source to control the level of the analog signal applied to the A/D converter. The analog voltage may also be combined with a control voltage produced by an analog peak detector, which detects the level of the input signal to the A/D converter, to produce a composite gain control signal.

Abstract: An analog carrier signal and its sidebands contain modulated information which is to be digitally encoded and processed. Demodulation and digital encoding is accomplished in a single process by an analog-to-digital converter, which samples the analog signals in response to a sampling signal of a frequency which is at least twice the bandwidth of the band of frequencies containing the carrier signal and its information-bearing sidebands. The analog signal samples are digitally encoded, producing a band of digital information signals corresponding to baseband signal components. When used in a television receiver to produce digital signal samples, the band of analog signals may include both sound and picture carriers and their audio and video information. By controlling the phase and frequency of the analog carrier signal in relation to the color subcarrier signal, and deriving the sampling signal from the analog carrier, an ease in video signal demodulation is provided.

Abstract: 1472988 Automatic current regulation RCA CORPORATION 17 July 1974 [3 Aug 1973] 31585/74 HeadingG3X A temperature-compensated constant current circuit includes a voltage source in the form of a conductive semi-conductor P-N junction, a resistor connected across the source, and a series combination of a resistor and a P-N junction also connected across the source. As shown in Fig. 2, transistors 22, 24 are supplied from a source B+, and the base and emitter of transistor 22 form a voltage source supplying current to a fixed resistor 29 and a resistor 35 connected in series with a diode-connected transistor 25. The values of the resistors are chosen so that, when the ambient temperature rises, the decrease in current in resistor 29 due to falling base-emitter voltage of transistor 22 is compensated by increased current in resistor 35 due to a smaller potential drop across transistor 25, producing substantially constant current flow in the main current paths of both transistors 22, 24. The regulator circuit is connected to the source B+ by way of a starting transistor 50 and a current repeater circuit in the form of an amplifier 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 21, 23 receiving an input signal at point D and producing a proportional output current at point A, the ratio of output to input depending on the number of parallel diode-resistor paths 10, 14 and 11, 15 used. Loads requiring constant current may be connected in any of paths A-A', C-C', D-D' or between terminal G and a reference potential. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the effect of the collector-emitter output impedance of transistor 25 is reduced by connecting a further transistor (30) between point D' and the collector of transistor 25, in cascade with transistor 24.

Abstract: A dual mode automatic phase controlled oscillator system employs multiple keyed phase comparators to produce control signals which are applied to lock the oscillator frequency and phase to a reference signal. One of the keyed comparators is continuously employed to produce an in-sync control signal. A coincidence gate is utilized to detect the existence of out-of-sync conditions, and associated circuitry produces a mode control signal which is applied to activate the second keyed phase comparator upon such occurrence. The second keyed comparator is thereby selectively operative during out-of-sync conditions to develop an additional control signal to enhance the pull-in characteristics of the system.

Abstract: A sample-and-hold circuit employs first and second transistors of the same conductivity type, having serially coupled collector-to-emitter current paths and including a feedback path coupling the collector of the first transistor to the base of the second transistor to provide a high-input impedance and a relatively low-output impedance circuit suitable for rapid updating of a hold capacitor. The circuit samples an applied signal when the first and second transistors are keyed into conduction by keying circuit means, and holds when these transistors are biased out of conduction. The circuit is particularly suited for application as a phase comparator.
