    Abstract: An optical rotary encoder includes four photosensor elements aligned in a square fashion. A first pair of diagonally aligned photosensor elements develop output signals of inverse phase with respect to each other as a slit plate rotates. The thus obtained output signals are applied to a comparator to obtain a first control signal. A second pair of diagonally aligned photosensor elements develop output signals of inverse phase with respect to each other as the slit plate rotates. The output signals from the second pair of photosensor elements are applied to another comparator to obtain a second control signal.

The light responsive section includes four photodiodes formed on a single substrate. Light emitted by an LED 30 is reflected by the reflecting plate 45 to be projected on PSDs 31 and 32 and the tilt state and vertical position of the operation part 34 are detected from their output currents and outputted as three-dimensional information to a computer main body to move the cursor of a display device of a computer main body in three dimensions.

These data are displayed in the 3D direction by the intensity of a color tone or a change of colors. Since an operation state can be visually and instantaneously recognized, operation can easily be checked. When an optional position on the display part 21 is selected by the input part 20 in executing mutual communication between the input part 20 and the display part 21, a panel-like multi- selection switch function can be obtained.
