Abstract: A method and apparatus for extruding a plastic rod having helical slots in its external surface comprises the use of a die including a relieved exit end face, resulting in a more uniform drag on the plastic melt. Plastic rods so formed are used in slotted core type optical fiber telecommunication cables. The die includes internal channels which form peripheral ribs on the plastic rod. The channels may follow either a helical or a straight path.

Abstract: In a ribbon type fiber optic cable there is disposed a stack of fiber optic ribbons, each composed of a set of individually coated optical fibers in a planar relationship to one another with the set of coated optical fibers also coated by a common coating of ultraviolet light cured material. The coefficient of friction between adjacent ribbons in a stack is equal to or less than 0.70.

Abstract: A light waveguide cable contains a layer of U-shaped carriers around a central core. Each U-shaped carrier contains a light waveguide fiber, bundle, ribbon, or ribbon stack. Carrier legs have a predetermined hinge line at a distance from the carrier base greater than the thickness of the light waveguide fiber, bundle, ribbon or ribbon stack. The carrier legs may have a smaller thickness or a concavity at the hinge line.

Abstract: Un método y aparato para extruir una varilla de plástico que tiene ranuras helicoidales en la superficie externa que comprende el uso de una matriz que incluye una cara de extremo de salida en relieve dando por resultado una resistencia al avance más uniforme en la fusion de plástico. Las varillas de plástico formadas de esta manera se usan en cables de telecomunicacion de fibra optica de tipo de nucleo ranurado. La matriz incluye canales internos que forman nervaduras periféricas en la varilla de plástico. Los canales puede seguir ya sea una trayectoria helicoidal o una trayectoria recta.
