Abstract: An optical waveguide fibre (12,14) has a first protective coating (16) surrounding and contacting its external surface. Over this is an interfacial layer (13) including a solid lubricant and cross-linked film forming binder and then a buffer coating (18). Pref the interfacial layer is applied as a non-aq. liq. dispersion contg. particles of PTFE or ultra-high mol. wt. polyethylene. The binder may be epoxy acrylate polymer. Also claimed is a method of mfg. a fibre coated as above.

Abstract: A method of making a strippable tight buffered cable is disclosed, the cable comprising an optical waveguide fiber, a first protective coat circumscribing and in contact with the outer surface of the optical waveguide an interfacial layer circumscribing and in contact with the external surface of the first protective coating composed of particles of solid lubricant held together with a cross-linked film-forming binder, and a second protective coating circumscribing the external surface of the interfacial layer. Apparatus for making the strippable cable is also disclosed.

Abstract: An optical fiber ribbon includes an interfacial layer between a plurality of coated optical fibers and a common coating layer. The interfacial layer includes a liquid lubricant material dispersed in a cross-linked solid material. The optical fiber ribbon is both peelable and thermally strippable. The interfacial layer adheres more strongly to the common coating material than to the coated optical fibers. The interfacial layer may be provided either as the outer layer of each of the individual coated optical fibers or as an inner layer of the common matrix coating.

Abstract: In a ribbon type fiber optic cable there is disposed a stack of fiber optic ribbons, each composed of a set of individually coated optical fibers in a planar relationship to one another with the set of coated optical fibers also coated by a common coating of ultraviolet light cured material. The coefficient of friction between adjacent ribbons in a stack is equal to or less than 0.70.
