The control unit 123 changes the operation of a data reception unit 122 in conformity to the digital I/F of the data transmission unit 112 in the source device 110, based on a result of discrimination by the discrimination unit 124 when the data reception unit 122 conforms to the digital I/F of the HDMI standard and the new standard. A connector unit for connecting an external device that operates with the digital I/F of the HDMI and new standards can be used, to have advantages in cost and space.

As a result, the outputted video signal is outputted in a waveform subjected to half blanking processing for the H level period. Thus, video display suitable for viewing a movie or the like is obtained.
