Abstract: A magnetic recording device and method, a magnetic reproduction device and method and a tape recording medium of improved performance are disclosed. Tracks are formed successively and obliquely along the longitudinal direction of a second magnetic tape having a width wider than a first magnetic tape and recording data is continuously recorded for at least two tracks of a digital recording format on each formed track, with each formed track being formed at a predetermined track pitch set based on the recording time and the reproduction signal characteristic. Thereby, recording data based on a digital recording format for application to the first magnetic tape can exhibit a sufficient C/N ratio and be recorded on the second magnetic tape for a long time.

The video and audio areas have respective auxiliary areas in which the topic data is provided. In addition, auxiliary character data is generated when character information is received by a teletext broadcast system and recorded in the auxiliary areas of the video and audio areas of each track.

SOLUTION: An integration equalization circuit 2 integration-equalizes a reproduced RF signal from a magnetic tape. A PLL circuit 7 extracts a CLK clock being a reference of A/D conversion in an A/D conversion circuit 4 from a reproduced RF signal, a CLK error circuit 5 detects an error (CLK error) of its CLK clock. A C1 error circuit 8 detects a C1 error from a digital signal after A/D conversion. A microcomputer 6 and a voltage generating circuit 9 performs CLK delay adjustment of the PLL circuit T based on a CLK error, while performs phase adjustment of an integration equalization circuit 2 based on a C1 error.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to reproduce information recorded in two recording systems by setting a gap width of a magnetic head to a value wider than a 1st track width in accordance with a 1st recording system and smaller than a 2nd track width in accordance with a 2nd recording system. SOLUTION: To enable this device to record and reproduce a video audio signal on an 8 mm video tape in a digital 8 mm system and be also practical enough to reproduce an video audio signal of an analog 8 mm system recorded on an 8 mm video tape, a gap width GpW of magnetic heads 12A, 12B is selected to be 19-29 μm, a value near the gap width GpW (= 20.5 μm) from which the highest C/N can be obtained in the analog 8 mm system. In such a manner, a sufficient reproducing output is obtained when a video audio signal recorded in the analog 8 mm system is reproduced, and also sufficient C/N can be obtained in practice also when a video audio signal recorded in the digital 8 mm system is reproduced.
