    Abstract: A coding apparatus comprising a band division filter (11) for dividing an input digital signal into signal components in a plurality of frequency bands, a block floating circuit (16) for implementing, every block, floating processing of an output signal of the band division filter (11), a plurality of orthogonal transform circuits (13, 14, 15) for orthogonally transforming respective output signals on the time base of the block floating circuit to signals on the frequency base, and an adaptive bit allocation encoder (18) for dividing output signals of the orthogonal transform circuits (13, 14, 15) into signal components in critical bands adaptively to allocate bit numbers thereto on the basis of allowed noise levels of respective critical bands, wherein the length in the time base direction of the blocks is caused to be variable, and the length in the time base direction of the blocks and a floating coefficient used in the floating processing are determined on the basis of the same index.

    Abstract: An apparatus for compressing a digital input signal compresses a digital input signal arranged into frames of plural samples. The digital input signal is orthogonally transformed by plural orthogonal transform circuits in blocks derived by dividing the frames by a different divisor in each circuit. The resulting spectral coefficients are quantized using an adaptive number of bits. The output of one orthogonal transform circuit is selected based on the outputs of the orthogonal transform circuits. The digital input signal is divided into plural frequency ranges, and frames are formed in each range. A block length decision circuit determines division of the frames of each range signal into blocks in response to range signal dynamics. The range signals are orthogonally transformed in blocks and the spectral coefficients are quantized. The apparatus also includes a frequency analyzing circuit that derives spectral data points from the input data, and groups them in plural bands. A noise level setting circuit finds the energy in each band and sets a allowable noise level in response to the band energy. A block floating coefficient calculating circuit calculates block floating coefficients based on the maximum spectral data point in each band. A quantizing bit number decision circuit determines the number of bits to use for quantizing in response to the allowable noise level and the block floating coefficients. A quantizing circuit quantizes the spectral data points in response to the quantizing bit number decision circuit.

    Abstract: In a method for compressing a digital audio input signal to provide a recording signal, the input signal is divided (11) into frames comprising plural samples. Each frame of plural samples is transformed (11) into a block of spectral coefficients. The block of spectral coefficients is divided into plural bands that include lower frequency bands, and a lowest frequency band. Block floating is applied to the spectral coefficients in each band with a block floating coefficient being generated (13) for each band. The spectral coefficients in each band are quantized (15) with an adaptive number of bits to provide quantized spectral coefficients in each band, and a word length is generated for each band. Finally, a block of data derived from the block of spectral coefficients is added (81) to the recording signal. The block of data derived from the block of spectral coefficients consists of the quantized spectral coefficients, a main word length for each band, a main block floating coefficient for each band, and a reserve word length at least for each of the lower frequency bands.
