Abstract: The method includes assigning to each user wishing to restore a document a smart card (6) containing identification data. Data identifying a document to be restored is transmitted from a terminal (9) connected to the smart card to the server (2). In response a decryption key specific to the document is transmitted to the smart card. The process for distribution of documents includes assigning to each user wishing to restore a document a smart card (6) containing identification data. A smart card (6) connected to the network is identified by a server (2) also connected to the network. Data identifying a document to be restored is transmitted from a terminal (9) connected to the smart card to the server (2). In response a decryption key specific to the document is transmitted to the smart card. The document to be restored is decrypted by means of an adapted reader (4) connected to the smart card. Within the smart card there is identification data for readers, so that fraudulent use of the smart card can be determined on the basis of data identifying readers which is stored within the smart card.
