Abstract: In order to perform, according to a received signal (r), a channel-estimation procedure and a cell-search procedure in cellular communication systems, there are executed at least one first operation of correlation of said received signal (r) with secondary synchronization codes (SSC) and a second operation of correlation of said received signal (r) with known midamble codes (mid, MPL, MPS), whilst said channel-estimation procedure comprises a third operation of correlation of at least part of said received signal (r) with known midamble codes (mid, MPL, MPS), said first, second, and third correlation operation being executed by sending at least part (emidamble) of said received signal (r) to an input of a correlation bank (111, 151; 203, 253; 303). There are envisaged the operations of: sending, in a first time interval, the received signal (r) to said correlation bank (303) for executing the first operation of correlation of said received signal (r) with secondary synchronization codes (SSC); sending, in a second time interval, at least part (emidamble) of said received signal (r) to said same correlation bank (303) for executing the second operation of correlation of said received signal (r) with known midamble codes (mid, MPL, MPS); sending, in a second time interval, the received signal (r) to said same correlation bank (303) for executing the third operation of correlation of at least part (emidamble) of said received signal (r) with known midamble codes (mid, MPL, MPS). Preferential application is in mobile communication systems based upon standards such as UMTS, CDMA2000, IS95 or WBCDMA.

Abstract: Encoded digital symbols (S1 S2 S3 S4 ) are transmitted via a first pair of antennas (Tx1, Tx2) and at least one second pair of antennas (Tx3, Tx4). The sets of symbols used for the transmission via the second pair of antennas (Tx3, Tx4) are re-ordered temporally (S3 S4 S1 S2 ) into subsets of symbols with respect to the symbols used for the first pair of antennas (Tx1, Tx2). For the first pair of antennas (Tx1, Tx2) there is used a signal subjected to encoding with a code-division-multiple-access code (CDMA) and subjected to spreading with a spreading code (c1), and, likewise, for the second pair or pairs of antennas (Tx3, Tx4) there are used signals subjected to encoding with respective code-division-multiple-access code (CDMA) and subjected to spreading with a respective spreading code (c2). At least one between the respective code-division-multiple-access code (CDMA) and the respective spreading code (c2) used for the transmission via the second pair of antennas (Tx3, Tx4) is different from the code-division-multiple-access code (CDMA) and from the spreading code (c1) used for the transmission via the first pair of antennas (Tx1, Tx2). The solution can be extended to the use of a plurality of second pairs of antennas in transmission and/or to the use of a plurality of antennas in reception.

Abstract: A method for automatic gain control, e.g. in a receiver for a mobile telecommunication system comprises the operations of: mixing (13) a received signal (Sin) with an error signal (Perr, Pf); performing an analog-to-digital conversion (14) on the result of said mixing operation, in order to obtain a controlled output signal (x(t), Sout); measuring (25) the power (Pmeas) of said controlled output signal (x(t), Sout); subtracting the measured power (Pmeas) from a reference power (Pref) in order to obtain said error signal (Perr, Pf). According to the proposed method the operation of measuring the power of the controlled output signal (x(t), Sout) comprises: setting at least a power threshold (Th;Th1, Th2, Th3); measuring (27) a rate of crossings of said power threshold (Th; Th1, Th2, Th3) by said controlled output signal (x(t), Sout) in a given observation window; deriving (29) from said number of crossings the measured power value (Pmeas, sigma 2=1). The proposed method is particularly suitable for application in receivers of mobile telecommunication systems based on CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access), but also for mobile telecommunication system according to GSM, UMTS, CDMA2000, IS95 o WBCDMA standards and satellite telecommunication systems.
