Abstract: Disclosed are diazabicyclo (2,2,2,) octadiones having the formula: I wherein R1-R6 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methyl, and ethyl, which are prepared by: A. reacting a compound having the formula: II wherein R and R' are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and alkyl or cyclo alkyl having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, and R1-R6 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methyl, and ethyl, with B. a reactant selected from the group consisting of ammonia and primary amines having the formula R2-NH2 wherein R2 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methyl, and ethyl, The compounds of formula I are useful in preparing the corresponding octanes which are in turn useful as inter alia antihistamines, sedatives and antibiotics.
