Abstract: Optical resolution of lysine in the form of racemic lysine sulphanilate is enhanced by the addition to the supersaturated solution of racemic lysine sulphanilate of one or more substances which suppress the formation of seeds of racemic lysine sulphanilate in the supersatured solution. Among the seed-suppressing substances which may be added are lysine, lysine acetate, lysine carbonate, amino acetic acid and glycerol. The yield of optically active lysine sulphanilate is improved according to the disclosed process.

Abstract: Levulinic acid hydantoin, i.e., beta- 5-(5-methylhydantoin) -propionic acid, (I) used as auxiliary agent for resolving racemates of basic cpds. esp. dl-lysine, is itself resolved by salt formation with optically active lysine in aq. soln. Optically active (I) which is also claimed per se does not racemise and is obtd. pure and in good yields. Equimolar amts. of the reactants are used for salt-formation, and the diastereomers are obtd. by fractional crystallisation. Optically active (I) and lysine are obtd. from the aq. soln. of the salts by means of ion-exchangers contg. SO3H-gps.
