    Abstract: In apparatus for separating liquids by thermal diffusion comprising two liquid-impervious walls 10, 11 adapted to be maintained at different temperatures and equidistantly spaced apart to form a substantially uniform thermal diffusion slit 17, a withdrawal port for separated liquid comprises an elongated opening transverse to the direction of flow of liquid within the slit, and having a width not greater than approximately the slit width. As shown, the liquid feed is introduced at 19 and fractions are withdrawn through two elongated openings each formed between shoulder 21 and the knife edge 27 of a strip 22 fitted in a groove in the wall; each opening communicates through flow-equalising space 29 with passage 30 leading to the exterior of the apparatus. The width of the slit 17 is preferably less than 0.15 inch and the width of the openings preferably from 0.005 inch up to half the width of the slit. The walls are maintained at different temperatures by the circulation of fluids through coils 18. The slit 17 may be arranged horizontally or vertically; when vertical, the feed may be at either end of the slit or central. The separation of a mixture of cetane and methyl naphthalene is described.

    Abstract: An emulsifier system for use in the tertiary recovery of oil comprises a mixture of a surfactant comprising a neutralized, oxidized solvent extracted oil and a cosurfactant comprising an alcohol having no more than 12 carbon atoms. The cosurfactant alcohol component preferably comprises a mixture of C2 to C8 alcohols. Tertiary recovery of oil is achieved by injecting brine or water, the emulsifier system and a polymer into an injection well and recovering oil from a producing well.
