    Abstract: An optical scanner module for directing a light beam to scan an optically encoded symbol includes an optical element mounted for oscillatory motion to scan the light beam in one direction by a flex element capable of torsional flexure. This oscillatory motion is induced by the interacting magnetic fields established by a permanent magnet mounted to the flex element and an electromagnetic coil driven by an AC current. bidirectional light beam scanning is achieved by mounting an assembly of the flex element, optical element and permanent magnet to one or more additional flex elements for oscillatory motion to scan the light beam in a second direction. This oscillatory motion is induced by the inclusion of an additional permanent magnet and/or electromagnetic coil.

    Abstract: A laser beam is swept by a scan mirror as a pattern of scan lines on a projection surface. The scan mirror moves at a variable speed along each scan line. Each scan line has a number of pixels. The pixels have time durations proportional to the variable speed of the scan mirror. A profile memory stores the time durations of the pixels. A controller causes selected pixels arranged along each scan line to be illuminated for the time durations stored by the profile memory to produce an image of uniform brightness and of uniformly sized pixels and in color.

    Abstract: The device has an image-processing unit reading encoded data of an image as well as extracting a portion of another image from an imager (12) to generate extracted portion data. The extracted portion corresponds to a person, whose identity is to be authenticated. A processor compares the data with the stored biometric data is located based on the data read from an image of the person. An independent claim is also included for a method for authenticating identity of a person using a portable device.
