Abstract: A FLUID SYSTEM FOR INCLUSION IN AN AUTOMATED FLUID SYSTEM FOR ANALYZING A SERIES OF LIQUID SAMPLES FLOWING SERIATIM, THE FIRST-MENTIONED SYSTEM SERVING TO DILUTE EACH SAMPLE FOR SUBSEQUENT DIVISION INTO A LARGE NUMBER OF PARTS. EACH DILUTEDPART IS INTENDED FOR FLOW TO ONE OF A LARGE NUMBER OF DIFFERENT SUBCOMBINATIONS OF THE TOTAL SYSTEM. IN EACH OF THE SUBCOMBINATIONS THE DILUTED SAMPLE PART MAY RECEIVE A SPECIAL TREATMENT, SUCH AS MIXING WITH APARTICULAR REAGENT OR REAGENTS UNDER CONTROLLED TEMPERATURE CONDITIONS FOR EXAMPLE, PRIOR TO ANALYSIS OF THAT SAMPLE PORTION AS BY PHOTOMETRY FOR EXAMPLE. EACH DILUTED SAMPLE PART MAY BE SUBJECTED TO A DIFFERENT TEST OR ANALYSIS THERE IS INVOLVED IN THE FIRST-MENTIONED SYSTEM THE SAME AND EQUAL DILUTION TREATMENT OF EACH SAMPLE AS THE SERIES. ALSO INVOLVED IN THE FIRST-MENTION SYSTEM IS THE EFFECTIVE INHIBITION OF CROSS CONTAMINATION OF SAMPLES FROM THE POINT OF INTRODUCTION OF THE SAMPLES INTO THE DILUTION SYSTEM TO THE POINT, AFTER DIVISION OF THE SAMPLES AS AFORESAID, WHERE THE SAMPLES FLOW INTO THE RESPECTIVE ONES OF THE AFORESAID ANALYSIS SUBCOMBINATIONS.

Abstract: 1339807 Mixing liquids; automatic analysis TECHNICON INSTRUMENTS CORP 25 Aug 1971 [14 Sept 1970] 39960/71 Headings B1C and B1X [Also in Division B8] In apparatus primarily for the colorimetric analysis of blood serum samples, a peristaltic pump 10 is associated with a sampling dip tube 20, an indexing turntable carrying sample containers 16, and a wash liquid container 24, which produce a flow of segments of sample liquid S and wash liquid W separated by air segment A. The pulsations caused by occlusion of the pump tube 36 by the roller 50B will travel along the tube to cause irregularity at the dip tube inlet. This may be arranged to occur at the stage when it causes least disturbance (which is during the intake of the sample which is large in comparison with the wash liquid and air segments) by arranging the flow path to be of suitable length or, as described, by suitable synchronisation of the pump with the dip tube movements. The sample segments are arranged to arrive at the junction 90 simultaneously with reagent segments from the tube 88. The pulsations caused by the roller 50A ceasing to occlude the pump tube are arranged to arrive at the junction 90 simultaneously with an air segment by suitably adjusting the length of the flow path. This minimises change in the sample/reagent proportions or at least restricts any change to the beginning or end part of the sample portion where it is least likely to affect accuracy of colorimetry.

Abstract: 1432608 Automatic analysis; preparing sample stream TECHNICON INSTRUMENTS CORP 17 May 1973 [9 June 1972] 23626/73 Heading G1B Sampling apparatus for use in automatic analysis comprises sampling means for taking into conduit 14, 24 and flowing along the conduit a stream of sample liquid segmented (both on sample offtake and by means of tube 32 in the embodiment shown) by a separating fluid immiscible with the sample liquid, fluid removing means 48, 56 in the conduit operative to remove only at predetermined time intervals a controlled volume of the stream from the conduit, the controlled volume comprising a volume of the separating fluid, and a dosage device 50, 52 downstream of the fluid removing means and connected to the conduit for introducing into the stream at the same time intervals a volume of fluid proportional to the controlled volume. In the apparatus shown, tube 32 is connected to a source of air under pressure and to accumulator 34, which releases to junction 36 at controlled intervals precise volumes of air at a pressure higher than that in reagent or diluent pump tube 30. The fitting 42 operates to remove all gas segments by line 56 and to introduce air segments via line 50 to divide the sample segments into 4. Each sample is initially taken by the offtake tube 14 in 3 portions, two "pecks" to clean the tube and a larger portion, the samples being separated by wash liquid. At fitting 42, the trailing end of a larger, measurement part of the sample is cut-off by an air segment and enclosed together with a wash liquid segment and the forward end of the next sample segment by this air segment and the next air segment, Fig. 5 (not shown). The outlet end 47 of fitting 42 is connected with distribution manifold 74 whence separate sub-streams 76 are pumped by means 78 to analytical cartridges 80.
