    Abstract: The present invention provides a liquid crystal display element substrate having spacers fixed in non-display regions on the liquid crystal display element substrate, where the load compression displacement of these spacers in terms of a compression stress of 0.5 to 0.6 GPa is from 0.001 to 1 .mu.cm/mN. Further, it provides a liquid crystal display device which is characterized in that, in a liquid crystal display device where a liquid crystal layer is held between two liquid crystal display element substrates, at least one of these liquid crystal display element substrates is an aforesaid liquid crystal display element substrate. As well as realizing a sufficient cell gap the present invention has the effect that, by maintaining a uniform cell gap within the screen, the problems of a lowering in the display quality due to change in the cell gap and the generation of bubbles at the time of low temperature are resolved. The liquid crystal display element substrate of the present invention and t he liquid crystal display device which employs it may be used as the display screens of personal computers, word processors, engineering work stations, navigation systems, liquid crystal televisions, videos and the like, and they are also suitable for use in liquid crystal projection, etc. Further, in thefields of optical communication and optical data processing, they are suitable for use as a spatial light modulator employing liquid crystals.

    Abstract: Spacers are fixed to non-display regions to a liquid crystal display element substrate and the compression displacement ratio of the spacer for the load of a compression stress of 0.5 - 0.6 GPa is 0.001 - 1 .mu.m/mN. In a liquid crystal display which comprises two liquid crystal display element substrates and a liquid crystal layer held between the two substrates, at least one of the two substrates is a liquid crystal display element substrate which is above described. With this constitution, sufficient cell gaps can be realized and uniform cell gaps can be maintained in the screen and the problems of the degradation of the display quality caused by the variation of the cell gaps and the generation of foams at low temperature can be solved. The above described liquid crystal display element substrate and the liquid crystal display employing it are applied to the display screen of a personal computer, a word processor, an engineering work station, a navigation system, a liquid crystal television, a video tape player, etc. and are preferably used for a liquid crystal projection, etc.. Further, in the fields of optical communication and optical information processing, they can be suitably employed as a space modulation element using liquid crystal.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an electrically conductive film from being wrinkled or cracked at the time of heating after coating with a liq. crystal oriented film in a color filter by specifying the Young's modulus of an overcoat film. SOLUTION: Blue, green and red picture elements 1-3 and fixed spacers 8 are arranged on a substrate 5 and an overcoat film 6 is formed to obtain the objective color filter. A black matrix 4 is preferably disposed among the picture elements 1-3. The overcoat film 6 is, e.g. an epoxy polymer film or an acrylic polymer film such as an epoxy film, an acrylic epoxy film or an acrylic film, a siloxane polymer film or a polyimide polymer film such as a polyimide film, a silicon-contg. polyimide film or a polyimidosiloxane film. The Young's modulus of the overcoat film 6 is >=2 GPa, preferably >=3 GPa, especially preferably >=4 GPa at 200 deg.C.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a substrate for a liquid crystal display element which embodies a sufficient cell gap, maintains the uniform cell gap within an image plane and is more hardly degraded in its display grade than the conventional elements when the force or impact from outside is applied thereon and a color liquid crystal display element including this substrate. SOLUTION: This substrate for the liquid crystal display element has the spacers fixed in the non-display region on the substrate. The elastic restoration rate of the spacers to a compressive stress of 0.4 to 0.6GPa is 20 to 80%. The substrate has the spacers contg. the acrylic resins fixed to the non-display region on the substrate for the liquid crystal display element and the elastic restoration rate of the spacers to the compressive stress of 0.4 to 0.6GPa is 0.01 to 80%. Further, at least one substrate for the liquid crystal display element of the color liquid crystal display element formed by holding the liquid crystal layer with two sheets of the substrates for the liquid crystal display element is the substrate for the liquid crystal display element described above.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a short circuit between a color filter and a counter substrate without limiting the design of the counter substrate by removing a transparent conductive film around the top of a spacer or removing the transparent conductive film on the spacer top and around the top to form a filter. SOLUTION: A black matrix 2 is formed by using a black paste on a nonalkali glass 1. Then a blue color layer 3 is formed to fill the openings in the black matrix 2 while a blue color layer 4 is simultaneously formed at the position where a spacer is to be formed on the black matrix 2. Similarly, a red color layer and a green color layer are formed in the openings 5, 7 and on the positions 6, 8 where the space is to be formed of the black matrix 2, respectively. Then a transparent protective layer 9 is formed and further a transparent conductive film 10 is laminated. Then the color filter substrate is set on a stage of a YAG laser illumination device, and the transparent conductive film 10 around the spacer is irradiated with laser light to produce the region 11 where the transparent conductive film 10 is removed.
