Abstract: A coating method and a coating apparatus which is suitable for stably forming a coating on the surface of a flat sheet member, and a method of manufacturing coated sheets such as a color filter. The coating method comprises the steps of supplying a coating liquid to a coating liquid discharging apparatus having a coating liquid discharging slit by means of a coating liquid feeder, relatively moving at least either the coating liquid discharging apparatus or a member to be coated and forming a coating having a predetermined thickness on the member. A coating start portion of the member is stopped at a place at which it opposes the coating liquid discharging slit of the coating liquid discharging apparatus, and discharge of the coating liquid from the coating liquid discharging slit is started. After a coating liquid bead which is in touch with both of the front end opening of the coating liquid discharging slit and the coating start portion of the member is formed, relative movement of at least either the coating liquid discharging apparatus or the member is started. By the coating method, discharge of the coating liquid is started when the member stops relative to the coating liquid discharging slit, and after the formation of the coating liquid bead is confirmed, the member is relatively moved in a state that the coating liquid bead remains stable. Therefore, the coating start position can be correctly determined, and a coating can be formed highly accurately.

Abstract: The present invention relates to coating methods and coating apparatus suitable for the stable production of coatings on the flat surface of sheet substrates, and methods for manufacturing coated sheet products such as color filters. An embodiment of the coating method according to the present invention is a coating method wherein a coating liquid feeder supplies coating liquid to a coating liquid applicator having a coating liquid discharge slot, with at least either the coating liquid applicator or a substrate to be coated being moved relatively one to the other to form a coating with a predetermined thickness on the substrate, comprising the steps of: keeping at rest the substrate at a position where the start-of-coating line of the substrate is in register with the coating liquid discharge slot of the coating liquid applicator; commencing discharge of the coating liquid through the coating liquid discharge slot; forming a coating liquid bead which is in contact with both an exit aperture portion of the coating liquid discharge slot and the start-of-coating line of the substrate; and subsequently commencing movement of at least either the coating liquid feeder or the substrate relatively one to the other. A coating method of this embodiment makes it possible to accurately determine the start-of-coating line and form a high accuracy coating, because by this method, after discharge of the coating liquid starts while the substrate to be coated is still at rest in register with the coating liquid discharge slot and the formation of the coating liquid bead is assured, the substrate is moved relatively to the coating liquid discharge slot while rendering the coating liquid bead stable.

Abstract: Spacers are fixed to non-display regions to a liquid crystal display element substrate and the compression displacement ratio of the spacer for the load of a compression stress of 0.5 - 0.6 GPa is 0.001 - 1 .mu.m/mN. In a liquid crystal display which comprises two liquid crystal display element substrates and a liquid crystal layer held between the two substrates, at least one of the two substrates is a liquid crystal display element substrate which is above described. With this constitution, sufficient cell gaps can be realized and uniform cell gaps can be maintained in the screen and the problems of the degradation of the display quality caused by the variation of the cell gaps and the generation of foams at low temperature can be solved. The above described liquid crystal display element substrate and the liquid crystal display employing it are applied to the display screen of a personal computer, a word processor, an engineering work station, a navigation system, a liquid crystal television, a video tape player, etc. and are preferably used for a liquid crystal projection, etc.. Further, in the fields of optical communication and optical information processing, they can be suitably employed as a space modulation element using liquid crystal.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain enough adhesion strength when a color filter and a counter electrode substrate are laminated by depositing a polyimide layer and an imido- modified silicone layer in this order to constitute a transparent protective film and processing the film into a desired pattern. CONSTITUTION:A transparent protective film is formed on a color layer, and further, a transparent electrode layer such as tin indium oxide is formed on the protective film. The transparent protective film is formed by depositing a polyimide layer and an imide-modified silicone layer in this order and processed into a desired pattern. The desired pattern means such a pattern that the transparent protective film is formed only on the required area such as the effective picture element area and that no film is formed on the edge part, side faces or back surface of the substrate. By processing the transparent protective film into this pattern, no transparent protective film is formed in unnecessary area. Thus, enoguh adhesion strength to laminate the color filter and the counter electrode substrate can be obtd.
