[Also in Division C3] Foams are made by laminating thermoplastic resin films to both surfaces of a thermoplastic resin sheet containing a foaming agent, whose decomposition temperature is above the softening temperature of the resin(s), cross-linking the films before, during, or after lamination, and heating to cause foaming. The central sheet may contain 0À1-60 wt. per cent of foaming agent. Foaming agents may be included in the outer films. The resins can be cross-linked before and/or after lamination by including 0À1-5 wt. per cent of cross-linking agent and/or by irradiating to 2-40 Mrad. dosage; crosslinking accelerators may be included. A single heating operation, e.g. by hot air, radiant heat or a molten salt or alloy bath, may serve both for cross-linking and foaming. Lists of foaming, cross-linking and accelerating agents are given; other additives present may be weathering agents, extenders, plasticizers, pigments, flameretardants, antistatic agents and ultraviolet absorbers. Films and sheets may be formed by extrusion, calendering or rolling a mixture of resin and additives; and may be laminated by heat and pressure or by extrusion. The foamable central sheet may be a multi-layer construction including non-foamable sheets. The outer films may be 1-1000 microns thick after the foaming operation and the central layer may be at least 300 microns thick before foaming. Specified thermoplastic resins are polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene, poly- 4-methylpentene-1 and copolymers of olefins with vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride and alkyl acrylates and methacrylates; and polyvinyl chloride.

Abstract: Disclosed are a polyethylene terephthalate film having the sum of F-5 values in longitudinal and transverse directions of 3500 to 5000 kg/cm , absolute shrinkages in longitudinal and transverse directions at 100 DEG C of up to 2.5% and an amorphous orientation factor of - 1.5 to 0.5, a process for the production of the film and a magnetic recording medium having the film as a base. A polyethylene terephthalate film useful as a magnetic recording medium having super high-tensile strengths in both longitudinal and transverse directions and a low heat shrinkage is provided, while it has been considered that such properties could not be obtained in polyethylene terephthalate films.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a composite film comprising a plastic film and a protective layer which is formed on at least one surface of the film, wherein the protective layer is made of a mixture comprising (a) an inorganic swellable silicate having a layered structure and (b) a compound containing a silanol group at a weight ratio of (a) to (b) of between I : 1000 and 2 : I and an antistatic composite film comprising a plastic film and a coating layer which is formed on at least one surface of the film, wherein said coating layer is made of a mixture comprising (a) a swellable inorganic silicate having a layered structure and containing at least one ion selected from among aliphatic ammonium ions having at most 6 carbon atoms, sodium ion, silver ion and lithium ion as an interlayer ion and (b) at least one member selected from among water-soluble compounds and water-dispersible resins at a weight ratio of (a) to (b) of abetween I : 1000 and 2 : I. These composite films are excellent in electrical characteristics, smoothness, slipperiness, anti-scratching properties, antistatic properties and the like, so that they are suitable for various uses such as electrical insulating material, wrapping material, labels, writable and erasable materials, print lamination film, magnetic recording medium, microfilm or the like.

Abstract: The present invention provides a polyester laminated film which comprises a transparent layer (1) and a delustered layer (2) laminated at least on one side face of the transparent layer. The transparent layer is formed by a biaxially stretched polyester film mainly composed of polyethylene terephthalate, while the delustered layer is made of an at least uniaxially stretched polyester film which is mainly composed of a polyethylene terephthalate copolymer containing, as a copolymer composition, 1 to 20 mol.% of the delustered layer of H &lparstr& OCH2CH2 &rparstr& OH or H &lparstr& OCH2CH2 &rparstr& n-1 O-X-O &lparstr& CH2CH2 &rparstr& n-1H (wherein n is an integer from 2 to 140, and X represents and which also contains inert inorgantc particles (2 min ) of 0.3 to 20 microns diameter in an amount 3 to 40% by weight of the delustered layer. Film according to the present invention as described above is roughened on the surface. and has excellent writability and transcribability by pencils, ink, indian ink, etc., combined with an excellent transparency, and therefore, is very useful for use as tracing films and the like.
