    Abstract: An apparatus for measuring the torsional rigidity of a fibrous material utilizes a rotating viscous liquid of known viscosity to impart a torque to the fibrous material. The fibrous material is clamped at its upper and lower ends by clamping devices and the lower clamping device is connected to a cylindrical mass which is floated in a viscous liquid of known viscosity contained within an outer container. The outer container is rotationally driven to impart a circular motion to the viscous liquid which accordingly applies a torque to the cylindrical mass. The torque applied to the cylindrical mass effects turning of the fibrous material and the extent of turning is measured to obtain an output proportional to the torsional rigidity of the fibrous material.
