Abstract: A propeller shaft for automobiles comprises a cylindrical-shaped body (1) of fiber reinforced plastics and a joint (2) press fitted into and joined to both ends of the body, said body (1) comprising a main layer (1a) extending along the entire length of the body (1) to enclose reinforced fibers which are helically wound at an angle of +/-5 to 30 DEG relative to an axial direction of the body, and a partial layer (1b) formed integral with and provided inside the main layer (1a) to enclose hooped, reinforced fibers. The joint (2) has an inclined surface (2c) extending downward toward an interface between the joint (2) and the body (1) or an upright surface (2d) having an outer diameter equal to or smaller than that of the partial layer (1b) and abutting against an outer end surface of the partial layer (1b) or a wedge (2f) having a tip end thereof opposed to an interface between the main layer (1a) and the partial layer (1b). When a compressive load is applied on the joint (2) in an axial direction, the inclined surface (2c), upright surface (2d) and the wedge (2f) separate the main layer (1a) from the partial layer (1b), so that breakage of the body (1) progresses whereby an energy absorbing effect owing to the body of a crushable construction is displayed.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a propeller shaft in which damage at the time of collision, etc., is effectively and smoothly advanced while satisfying a fundamental strength request, and which has excellent energy absorption effect. CONSTITUTION: A propeller shaft comprises an FRP body cylinder 1 containing a plurality of reinforcing fiber layers bonded to a joint 2, wherein a cylindrical shaft direction load transmission surface 3 between the joint 2 and the end face 1a of the cylinder 1 is so formed as to be a circumferentially partly extended surface on a specific layer 1b previously set of the layers.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To improve the strength of a body cylinder at a connecting part by preventing the cutting of reinforcing fiber in the cylinder due to the cut teeth of a press fitting member. CONSTITUTION: An FPR cylinder comprises other member 2 connected by press fitting to an FRP body cylinder 1, and cut teeth 4 formed on the connecting surface of the member 2 to the cylinder 1, extended in the axial direction and arranged in the circumferential direction. The cylinder 1 having a reinforcing fiber helical winding layer provided over the entire length of the cylinder 1 and a reinforcing fiber hoop winding layer provided at the end of the cylinder 1 inside the helical winding layer. The member 2 is connected by press fitting to the hoop winding layer, and a layer 3 made only of resin or resin containing short fiber is provided on the inner periphery of the hoop winding layer.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To make crash destruction progress by providing a wedge means including a main layer extending along the whole length of a FRP cylindrical main body and a partial payer inside the main layer integrally therewith for causing a joint to apply an axial direction compressing load between the main layer and the partial layer and to peel these. CONSTITUTION:When an axial direction compressing load is applied to a propeller shaft, a joint 2 is pushed to a main body 1 side, a wedge 2d is pushed in between a main layer la and a partial layer 1b and a spreading distortion of a circumferential direction is generated on the main layer 1a by the function of the wedge Since spreading destruction expansion for the main layer 1a is smaller than that for the partial layer 1b, only the main layer 1a is destroyed and inter-layer peeling between the main layer 1a and the partial layer lb occurs. The destruction of the main layer 1a is greatly advanced by a projecting part 2c. However, no destruction occurs on the partial layer lb connected to the joint 2 and this moves in an axial direction in the main body 1 together with the joint 2 while destroying the main layer 1a. Thus, satisfying such basic requirements as strength, the number of dangerous revolutions and the like, destruction is surely progressed while matching the destruction of a body at the time of crash.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To achieve the enhancement of the quality of an FRP tubular member and the stabilization of the production thereof by stabilizing the guide eye of a reinforcing fiber bundle before or during the impregnation with a resin. CONSTITUTION:First guide rolls 7a, 7b guiding reinforcing fiber bundles 4 to a resin impregnation bath 9 are inclined in mutually opposite directions and second guide rolls 11a, 11b guiding the reinforcing fiber bundles 4 through the bath 9 are arranged so as to form a turncated chevron within the plane parallel to the sending direction of the reinforcing fiber bundles.
