Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a TN type liquid crystal display element with which the respopse speed is greatly improved, the high definition display of a large capacity is embodied and the constitution is practicably usable. SOLUTION: The value of the min. driving voltage of the TN type liquid crystal display element having the liquid crystal molecule arrangement in which the nematic liquid crystal compsn. 9 has about 90 deg.C helix angle and the orientation direction of the liquid crystal molecules is nearly parallel with the surfaces of substrates 1, 2 is set at the value below the voltage value which exceeds the rising threshold voltage of the liquid crystal molecules and at which the liquid crystal molecules rise completely. More specifically, the value described above is so set that the effective retardation value of the liquid crystal cells in state of impressing the min. driving voltage on the element attains about 0.48μm. The high-fineness display of the large capacity is embodied and the response speed of the practicably usable TN type liquid crystal display element is greatly improved by this constitution.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal display element which makes display with excellent visibility and high grade by providing this element with color filters provided with means for making parallel light incident on the inside of liquid crystal cells and diffusing the light emitted through the liquid crystal cells at every pixel, thereby improving the visual angle characteristics. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal panel 1 has a large change in luminance according to angles. Then, the incident light rays 2, 1 on the liquid crystal panel 1 are controlled by such a paralleling element 4 as to parallel these light rays to the parallel light rays having the certain specific angle thereof and the light rays 2, 2 transmitted through the liquid crystal panel 1 are widened by a diffusing element 3, by which the dependency of the liquid crystal display element on the visual angles is eliminate. The liquid crystal panel is applicable not only to an LCD of an active matrix type, such as TFT-LCD but also to the LCDs of all display modes, such as ST type LCDs. The places where the color filters are arranged may be any places, insofar as such places are on the optical path where the light passes as the directions of the light rays are controlled. The color filters may be arranged on one or both sides of the diffusing element 3 or the paralleling element 4.

Diagonal electric field e which is an electric field having electric field components parallel with the substrate plane is formed within a liquid crystal layer added with dye as guest-host dichromatic dyestuff when a voltage is impressed between the electrodes from a power source 22 via the TFTs 21 of the lower substrate 12. Then, generation of a disturbance in many molecule arrangements within one pixel is made possible and the control of light transmission and light scattering by each pixel is made possible. A displayed image having a high contrast ratio is thus obtd.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To generate walls and to obtain a light scattering effect by forming an electrode structure in which conductor parts are electrically connected for each of respective pixels into molecular arrangement in which the tilt directions of liquid crystal molecules are capable of taking >=2 directions when an electric field is impressed to a liquid crystal layer by non-conductor parts. CONSTITUTION:The diagonal electric field (e) is applied to the liquid crystal layer 20 when a voltage is impressed thereto with the element structure formed by forming a common electrode 13 on an upper substrate 11 and plural pieces of pixel electrodes 14 on a lower substrate 12, depositing upper and lower oriented films 15, 16 on both electrodes 13, 14 and packing the liquid crystal layer 20 between the upper and lower oriented films 15 and 16. The liquid crystal molecules are oriented in the direction of this electric field (e) and, therefore, the directions of the liquid crystal molecules M are made symmetrical with the center of the electrodes on the striped conductor parts 13a and the nonof the liquid crystal molecules are opposed to each other in the central part of the electrodes, the walls DL1, DL2 are formed in these parts. The light scattering is obtd. by two kinds of these walls DL1, DL2.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a liquid crystal display element realizing a wide and uniform visual field angle characteristic without generating inconvenient colorings being different from a color to be realized essentially in a picture. CONSTITUTION:A wide and uniform visual field angle characteristic is realized since orientation in which liquid crystal molecules rise up at the time of voltage impression is made random (to be not uniform) and T-V characteristic becomes almost the same in every orientation by forming the surfaces of oriented films 23, 25 on substrates so that liquid crystal molecules in a liquid crystal layer 19 are held almost in a horizontal posture with respect to the oriented films 23, 25 on the substrates 11, 17 and orientation of major axes of the liquid crystal molecules are not uniform in the of case where external is not applied applied. Further, the retardation value of the liquid crystal layer 19 is adjusted to be 440nm+ or -50nm and the twist angle of the liquid crystal molecules is adjusted in the range from 65 degrees to 115 degrees. Then, excellent picture displays are obtained since the inconvenient colorings in displaced pictures are eliminated.

When a refractive index in the thickness direction of the optical anisotropic substance layer 2 and a refractive index in the surface direction of the optical anisotropic substance layer 2 are denoted as (nz) and (nxy), respectively, and (nxy)>(nz), thickness of the liquid crystal layer 3 and thickness of the optical anisotropic substance layer 2 are roughly equal, and when a refractive index in the major axis direction of a liquid crystal molecule used for the liquid crystal layer 3, and a refractive index in the minor axis direction of the liquid crystal molecule are denoted as n1 and n2, respectively, (nxy) n1, and (nz) n2 are realized.
