Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element for high-definition display excellent in visibility by improving the contrast of a liquid crystal display element and visual angle characteristic of a display color. SOLUTION: A visual angle compensating element obtained by assembling negative optical anisotropic optical anisotropic elements 3 and 5 in which the inclination of optical axes are changed from one surface to the other surface to a TDTN(two-domain TN(twisted nematic)) and DDTN(domain divided TN) type liquid crystal display element 4 for driving forming one picture element at plural areas whose orientation characteristics is different is arranged on the liquid crystal element 4 surface for driving. The element can be arranged on both surfaces of the element 4.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce field angle dependency of, specially, a contrast ratio and a display color. SOLUTION: This display element is equipped with at least one polarizing plate 1 or 4 and a liquid crystal cell for driving which has liquid crystal e3 sandwiched between two substrates 3a and 3b. Further, the element has the optical anisotropic element 2 constituted by connecting optical anisotropic units along the thickness, and the optical anisotropic units are so arrayed that they are not constant, but minimum in optical-axis angle along the thickness and also negative in optical anisotropy along the thickness. Further, the angle between the optical axis of the optical anisotropic element 2 and the substrate surface of the liquid crystal cell for driving varies continuously or stepwise along the layer thickness of the optical anisotropic element 2. Then an optical anisotropic element which has positive optical anisotropy can be combined with this optical anisotropic element 2.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a novel high-speed responsive LCD which has a large capacity and is practically usable for high-fineness display by adopting the constitution to approximately parallel the plural liquid crystal molecules of a third liquid crystal layer region with each other and to twist and arrange the liquid crystal molecules within the intra-surface direction of substrates from the one substrate toward the other substrate when no voltage is impressed on electrodes. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal layer 9 consists of the first liquid crystal layer region A, the liquid crystal layer region B and the third liquid crystal layer region C consisting of the plural liquid crystal molecules held between these two regions. The plural liquid crystal molecules in the third liquid crystal layer region C are approximately parallel with each other and are twisted and arranged within the intra-surface direction of the substrates from the one substrate toward the other substrate in the non-impression of the voltage on the electrodes. The inclination of a part of the liquid crystal molecules 9a among the plural liquid crystal molecules in the third liquid crystal layer region C is arranged approximately parallel with the normal direction of the substrates. The state of the liquid crystal layer at the impression of the first voltage attains the state approximate to the bent arrangement in pi cells. The high- speed response is obtd. when the liquid crystal driving voltage is changed.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain a liquid crystal display element of OCB mode constitution with which the TFT switching elements and MIM elements used for a large- capacity display are usable, the starting time is shortened and the lower voltage for maintaining bent arrangement is necessitated. CONSTITUTION: This liquid crystal display element has a pair of electrodes 13, 14 arranged apart a spacing and a liquid crystal layer 20 arranged between these electrodes. The liquid crystal layer 20 is so arranged that liquid crystal molecules 21 have pretilt angles on the electrode surfaces and that the respective pretilt angles are reversed on both electrode surfaces and the pretilt directions of the liquid crystal molecules 21 are parallel. Further, the liquid crystal display element has a bent arrangement in a state of applying a voltage between the electrodes. The magnitude of the pretilt angles of the liquid crystal molecules 21 vary with the pretilt angle α01 of the one electrode surface and the pretilt angle α02 of the other electrode surface.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To fix the points where discrination lines are generated by slit parts and to stabilize the generation of the boundary lines for orientation to different liquid crystal orientation states by providing the slit parts along the boundary parts of the different liquid crystal orientation states in respective pixels to at least one of the first electrode and the second electrode. CONSTITUTION:Lower electrodes 55 of a lower substrate 54 are rectangular and the boundaries b0 of the liquid crystal orientation state of a lower oriented film 60 are formed in the prescribed positions bisected in a longitudinal direction. Namely, the regions of the different orientation states shifting the rubbing direction by 180 deg. are formed within one pixel P. The running orientation regions shifting the rubbing directions b1 and c1 by 180 deg. with the boundary b0 bisecting the one pixel P as a boundary are similarly formed on the upper oriented film 53 on an upper substrate 51 as well. Further, the slit parts 61 are formed by each one pixel along the boundaries b0 of the different orientation states on the common electrode 52 of the upper substrate 51. On the other hand, black matrix layers 62, 59 are formed on the lower substrate 54 surface on the rear side of the lower electrodes 55 corresponding to the slit parts 61.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To decrease the number of generated disclination lines which cause a problem when one pixel is divided into two different-orientation areas by forming areas of pixels, which adjoin to an optional pixel, into the same molecule array area. CONSTITUTION:Pixels a11, a12... and a21, a22... which are arrayed in matrix on a substrate have rectangular surface areas respectively, and each of the pixel is divided into an area A (A1-A3) which differs vertically in molecular array and a B area (B1-B3) which is 180 deg. different in the tilt direction of liquid crystal molecules from the area A about a screen horizontal direction. Further, the pixels are so arrayed that the areas A and B are inverted in position by horizontal lines. For example, the area A2 of the pixel a12 is the same molecular array area with the areas A1, A3, and A5 of other pixels a11 and 13 which adjoin to the pixel a12 on the left and right side and the pixel a22 which adjoins to it the lower side, and the areas B are in the same relation, so that the areas of all the pixels are held substantially in this relation.

Then, a positional relation between the spacer 15 and the contact hole 9 closest to this spacer 15 is constituted so that the contact hole 9 exists on a nearly extended line in the orientation processing direction of an oriented film on the substrate surface, on which the spacer 15 is formed viewing from the spacer 15.
