    Abstract: PURPOSE:To simplify the process and improve the quality of a product by forming metal molds so as not to generate portions required to be cut off after molding in the process to mold the heated and softened glass with the metal molds. CONSTITUTION:A heated and softened large-diameter glass tube 1 is press- molded by split metal molds 3 and 3. A continuous wall 8 is formed between two legs of the U-shaped discharge path 7 of the glass bulb 6 to hold the strength, but the upper end section 13 of the continuous wall 8 must be cut off from the continuous wall 8 to seal mounts 14 and 14. A punching projection 20 and a punching hole 1 are formed on the metal molds 3 and 3 so that the upper section 13 of the continuous wall 8 does not appear. The cutting process of the upper section 13 is not required and the deformation and strength deterioration of this portion resulting from the cutoff is prevented as compared with the case that this upper section 13 has a glass wall and must be cut off.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent thermal deformation of a bulb and thermal deterioration of phosphor coating film by forming a protection layer made of a metallic oxide between the inside surface of the bulb and the phosphor coating film. CONSTITUTION:Bulbs 8, 9 with their inside surfaces coated with a phosphor coating film 12 and made of a soft glass are joined or sealed by the use of glass-based adhesive of joining work temperature of 500-600 deg.C. In this case, a protective layer 20 made of a heat conductive metallic oxide is formed between the inside surfaces of the bulbs 8, 9. Namely, when the glass bulbs 8, 9 are joined or sealed, the heat applied to the end portions of the bulbs 8, 9 is transmitted by the protective layer 20 formed on the inside surfaces of the bulbs 8, 9 by the effect of heat conduction to the other parts of the bulbs 8, 9 to restrict excessive temperature rise at the end portions of the bulbs 8, 9. This arrangement not only prevents the bulbs 8, 9 from thermally deforming but also prevents a phosphor coating film 12 from thermally deteriorating.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent the occurrence of cracks and ruptures at connection sections by locally heating and softening expected connection sections with no protective films to form connection holes and connecting mating connection holes together to form a continuous discharge path. CONSTITUTION:In the method to form a fluorescent lamp with a continuous discharge path by connecting multiple bulbs 1-3, expected connection sections 13, 23, 33 are locally heated and softened with no protective film 4 and blown through to form connection holes, then mating connection holes of the multiple bulbs 1-3 are connected together to form a continuous discharge path. Since no protective film 4 exists at the expected connection sections 13, 23, 33, no metal oxide is infiltrated into the melted glass when it is heated and melted, thus no distortion is generated on the connection sections after the cooling. Ruptures and cracks can be thereby prevented.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To enlarge the wetted area by glass adhesive to increase the adhesion strength by providing notched portions on at least either of the rising peripheral wall of a filling member or continued walls of glass tubes. CONSTITUTION:Notched portions 40, 40 are provided on the rising peripheral wall 24 formed around the flange portion 23 of the body 21 of a connecting member so as to face to the continued walls 18, 18 of glass bulbs 10, 11. When the connecting member 20 is joined between respective connecting end portions 10a, 11a of U-shaped glass bulbs 10, 11, the collision of the upper surface of the wall 24 to the lower surfaces of the walls 18, 18 can be avoided by the said notched portions 40, 40, and the lower surfaces of the walls 18, 18 are inserted in the rising peripheral wall 24. Thus the height of the wall 24 can also be enlarged. Therefore, the contact area (wetted area) of melted glass adhesive 25 to bulbs 10, 11 can be enlarged, and the wetted area by the glass adhesive 25 on the body 21 of the connecting member 20 can also be enlarged to increase the adhesion strengths.
