    Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for preparing a polyester film which has not only uniaxially enhanced mechanical properties but also biaxially enhanced mechanical properties. The process involves heat-setting a biaxially oriented polyester film at a temperature above that used for the machine and transverse direction stretching and above that used for the machine direction re-stretching, but at least 10 DEG C. below the melting point of the polyester, then re-stretching the film in both the machine and transverse directions, and re-heat-setting the film.

    Abstract: A photographic support of a composite polyester film in which additives and oligomers can be incorporated in the support without exerting any undesirable effects upon photographic characteristics, which film is constructed by an inner layer of polyester containing volatile diffusible substances or exudative substances, and a covering layer of another sort of polyester, with which both sides of the inner layer are covered, not containing the above-described substances judging from practical viewpoint and that, having a glass transition point equal to or higher than that of the inner layer, and which film is orientated along at least one prescribed axis.

    Abstract: A biaxially oriented polyester film which is well balanced between sliding properties and transparency and having an enhanced uniformity in thickness is prepared by a process wherein a polyester, predominantly comprised of polyethylene terephthalate, is extruded into a sheet form extrudate; the extrudate is quenched to a temperature of below Tg to obtain a solidified, substantially amorphous film; the film is drawn in the longitudinal direction at a drawing ratio of larger than 2.4 but smaller than 6.5; the film is quenched; and then, the film is drawn in the transverse direction at a drawing ratio of at least 2.5. The drawing in the longitudinal direction is carried out in two steps wherein: (i) in the first drawing step, the substantially amorphous film is drawn in one or more stages at a total drawing zone length (l1) of at least 50 mm so that the resulting polyester film possesses a birefringence of 1x10-3 to 12x10-3; (ii) the drawn film is kept, without being quenched to a temperature of not higher than the Tg, in contact with a roll maintained at 100 DEG to 130 DEG C.; and then, (iii) in the second drawing step, the film is drawn at a drawing ratio of larger than 1.6 but smaller than 2.7 in one stage at a drawing zone length of shorter than l1/2.

[Also in Division C3] A composition comprises (i) a polyimide precursor obtained by reacting a diamine with an aromatic dianhydride having a group cyclizable to form part of an oxazole, thiazole, oxazinone or imidazole ring and (ii) 0À01 to 30 wt. per cent of phosphoric, phosphorous or hypophosphorous acid or an ester thereof in (iii) an organic solvent. The preparation and cyclization of precursors (i) is described and claimed in Specification 1,237,004. Extensive lists of all three ingredients are given. The compositions may be converted to shaped articles prior to or simultaneously with heating to effect cyclization; the presence of (ii) is stated to lower the temperature required, e.g. by 50‹ C. In examples compositions having N-methyl-2- pyrrolidone or dimethyl acetamide as solvent were cast on to glass or steel plates or a chromium-plated drum, spread with a doctor blade, dried in air at 120-128‹ C. and peeled from the casting surface. Films of Examples (1) and (2) were further heat treated in vacuo at 330‹ C. or in air at 370‹ C.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To suppress the telescoping of a polyester film subjected to vapor deposition and to permit high-speed vapor deposition by maintaining a specific relation between the charge potential and surface roughness of the polyester film preliminarily applied with an electrostatic charge and the vapor deposition speed at the time of depositing a metal, etc., by evaporation on the surface of the polyester film which travels at a high speed in a vacuum. CONSTITUTION:The polyester film 4 is un-wound from an un-winding part 2 of a film roll 3 at 400m speed in a vacuum chamber 1 and is fed via guide rolls 8, 9 to a vapor deposition part 5 in the midway where the metal such as Al is deposited on the film by evaporation. The film is taken up as a product roll 7 in a taking up part 6. The electrostatic charge is applied to the polyester film by an electrode 11 connected to a high-voltage power source 12 in the position before the taking up part 10 in this case. The relation expressed by equation (1) is maintained in a V>=200(m/min) range between the charge potential Q(V) of the polyester film 4 in this stage and the surface roughness Ra(u) at the center line average height thereof as well as the vapor deposition speed (m/min), by which the generation of the telescoping in the polyester film 4 is prevented.
