    Abstract: An improved magnetic recording medium comprising a flexible support consisting of at least about 70 mol % of p-oriented aromatic polycarbonamide units. The polycarbonamide may include substituent groups on the aromatic nuclei. The support has a density of more than about 1.41 g/cm3 at 25 DEG C and 0% relative humidity, and a tensile modulus higher than about 800 kg/mm2 in at least one direction, combined with a thin layer of magnetically susceptible material deposited electrically or dispersed in a nonmagnetic binder. The magnetic recording medium in this invention shows excellent running performance and has superior dimensional stability both thermally and hygroscopically.

[Also in Division C3] A composition comprises (i) a polyimide precursor obtained by reacting a diamine with an aromatic dianhydride having a group cyclizable to form part of an oxazole, thiazole, oxazinone or imidazole ring and (ii) 0À01 to 30 wt. per cent of phosphoric, phosphorous or hypophosphorous acid or an ester thereof in (iii) an organic solvent. The preparation and cyclization of precursors (i) is described and claimed in Specification 1,237,004. Extensive lists of all three ingredients are given. The compositions may be converted to shaped articles prior to or simultaneously with heating to effect cyclization; the presence of (ii) is stated to lower the temperature required, e.g. by 50‹ C. In examples compositions having N-methyl-2- pyrrolidone or dimethyl acetamide as solvent were cast on to glass or steel plates or a chromium-plated drum, spread with a doctor blade, dried in air at 120-128‹ C. and peeled from the casting surface. Films of Examples (1) and (2) were further heat treated in vacuo at 330‹ C. or in air at 370‹ C.
