    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing graphite fiber, capable of suppressing growth of silicon carbide and attachment of silicon carbide to fiber to be graphitized traveling through a muffle furnace in production process of a graphite fiber and attaining remarkable improvement of productivity of graphite fiber. SOLUTION: In a method for producing graphite fiber comprising graphitizing a fiber 2 to be graphitized in which silicon compound is contained by continuously traveling the fiber in a muffle furnace kept in inert atmosphere having 2,200-3,000 temperature, the distance between a muffle side wall 4 and the fiber 2 to be graphitized is kept within the range of 3-25 mm.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for continuously producing carbon fibers, capable of preventing the carbon fibers from wrapping around a roller or breaking and capable of continuously obtaining the carbon fibers little in fuzzes and excellent in handling in downstream processings in improved production efficiency by subjecting a precursor fiber bundle to a flame-resistant treatment, imparting water to the flame-resistant fiber bundle and subsequently carbonizing the treated fiber bundle. SOLUTION: This method for continuously producing carbon fibers comprises heating the precursor fiber bundle of polyacrylonitrile, etc., in an oxygen- containing atmosphere, such as air, heated at 200-300 deg.C, imparting water (preferably in an amount of 0.1-2.0 times the weight of the obtained flame-resistant fiber bundle) to the flame-resistant fiber bundle and subsequently carbonizing the fiber bundle into the carbon fibers. The density of the fibers is preferably controlled to >=500 filaments/mm, and a plurality of the precursor fiber bundles are preferably allowed to run side by side.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing carbon fibers, capable of preventing the mixing adjacent precursor fibers due to the decrease in the distance among of the precursor fiber strands on a grooved roller for simultane ously sintering the precursor fibers and thereby capable of improving the process ability of the precursor fibers by blowing a gas toward the outside of the grooved roller for the precursor fibers on the feeding side of the grooved roller. SOLUTION: This method for producing carbon fibers contains guiding a plurality of precursor fiber 4 into the grooves of a grooved roller 3. Therein, just before the fibers 4 reach the roller 3, a gas 1 is blown from a pipe 2 for blowing the gas to the outside of the roller 3 in order to prevent the mutual interference of the adjacent fibers. The gas is preferably blown at a velocity of >=0.5m/sec and at a blowing angle of >=10 degree to the fibers. The tensions of the fibers at the gas-blowing positions are preferably 0.05-0.3g/d, and the gas is preferably blown on the fibers just in front of the fiber-guiding positions on the grooved roller.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To suppress the formation of a sizing liquid film between adjacent yarns and remarkably decrease the uneven application of a sizing agent by immersing carbon fiber yarns in a sizing agent liquid and blowing compressed gas against the yarns at a specific flow rate. CONSTITUTION:Non-twisted carbon fiber yarns 2 are transferred through a roller 1 and immersed in a sizing liquid 3 composed of a solution or a dispersion of a sizing agent. The formation of a liquid film between adjacent yarns is prevented by blowing a normal temperature compressed air flow through small nozzles of a pipe 4 placed several cm above the yarns 2 at a flow rate between 0.5 and 10m/sec and higher than the surface tension of the liquid.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a carbon fiber by using a horizontal carbonization furnace, effectively discharging the waste gas by controlling the pressures in the furnace at the inlet side and the outlet side of a flame- resistant yarn, giving carbon fibers having stable quality and preventing the leakage of the waste gas. SOLUTION: A gas is flowed in the horizontal carbonization furnace from the inlet side to the outlet side of the flame-resistant yarn and the waste gas in the furnace is discharged from a waste gas suction port. The yarn is carbonized while maintaining the pressure in the furnace at the yarn-inlet and outlet sides to be higher than the atmospheric pressure and keeping the average pressure gradient from the outlet and inlet sides to a waste gas suction port to >=0.25 Pa/m.
