    Abstract: High strength, fracture tough, high temperature oxidatively stable, gas turbine engine core engine components are described made of silicon carbide fiber reinforced ceramic matrix or silicon carbide fiber reinforced glass matrix material. A gas turbine engine containing core engine components as above described is also disclosed.

    Abstract: The power plant operating method is for a plant of the active clearance controlled type, including a gas turbine engine housed within a nacelle compartment and a cooling air manifold extending around the engine. The method involves admitting active clearance control cooling air into the nacelle compartment and discharging the air against the engine. The method also comprises maintaining the air pressure within the nacelle compartment at altitude cruise conditions at a level which is on the order of one or two and one-half pounds per square inch above the pressure of the air externally of the power plant. The method then involves discharging air from the compartment in an aft direction relative to the aircraft on which the power plant is installed.

    Abstract: Silicon Carbide Fiber Reinforced Glass Composites Silicon carbide fiber reinforced glass composites are disclosed having high strength, fracture toughness, and oxidative stability, even in high temperature use environments. Disclosed composites include silicon carbide fiber reinforced borosilicate glass, high silica content glass, and aluminosilicate glass. Flexural strengths in excess of 40,000 psi up to temperatures as high as 1150.degree.C are attained with such composites.
