A control ring extends circumferentially about a central axis. A plurality of circumferentially spaced carrier portions have a cavity receiving the control ring. There are circumferential gaps between the carrier portions. A blade outer air seal is mounted on the carrier portions radially inwardly of the control ring. The control ring maintains the carrier portions at a radially outwardly expanded position when heated by an electric heater.

A method of densifying a CMC article includes the steps of pyrolyzing a CMC article until a desired initial porosity is achieved, coating CMC pores within the CMC article with carbon, pyrolyzing the carbon to form carbon pores, coating the carbon pores with silicon, and heat treating the CMC article to create a silicon carbide filled pore integrated with silicon carbide of the CMC article to densify the CMC article.

A blade outer air seal system for a gas turbine engine includes a plurality of ring carriers made of a first material having a first coefficient of thermal expansion. A plurality of seal segments are carried, respectively, on the plurality of ring carriers. A ring member is carried in the plurality of ring carriers. The ring member is made of a second material that is different from the first material in composition. The second material has a second coefficient of thermal expansion such that the first coefficient of thermal expansion is 75 -175% of the second coefficient of thermal expansion.

A method of making a platform of a blade includes the steps of creating two platform sections by solidifying a material with a fabric in a mold and positioning a band of fabric around the two platform sections to retain an airfoil and define a blade. The method further includes the step of bonding the two platform sections together by solidifying the material to define a platform of a solid material. The platform is not bonded to the airfoil.

One or more carriages (20, 22, 24, 26, 28) designed to move in two or more directions are disposed within the pathways (11, 13). Each carriage (20, 22, 24, 26, 28) is suspended above the surface from the pathways (11, 13) and capable of maintaining a workload (34, 54, 84, 104, 134) in place and permitting movement of the workload in at least four directions.
