Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the durability of a member exposed to high temperature. SOLUTION: A turbine blade 10 for a gas turbine engine is composed of a directionally-solidified metallic base material such as supper alloy, and also has an air foil 12, a root part 14, and a platform 16 positioned between the blade 10 and the part 14. The platform 16 is equipped with a lower surface 18 adjoining the part 14, and aluminide coating including noble metal such as white metal is given to blade portions easily corrosional or crackable in stress corrosion such as the surface 18 or neck part 19 of the platform 16. This coating prevents corrosion or stress-corrosional crack in these regions.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the coating film of an aluminum compd. capable of being easily applied on the selected part of a metallic article and highly resistant to oxidation and thermal fatigue. SOLUTION: The local coating film of a low-activity aluminum for a metallic article is formed by arranging a tape coating film material on a part of the article. The coating film material contains a binder, a halide activator, an aluminum source and an inert ceramic material. The coating film material and article are heated at 1800 deg.F (982 deg.C) to 2050 deg.F (1121 deg.C) for 4 to 7hr in an inert atmosphere. Consequently, the local coating film of a low-activity aluminum compd. having an aluminum coating film microstructure including two different regions, i.e., an inner diffusion region and an outer region contg. 20-28wt.% aluminum, is formed.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the durability of a structural element by applying a rust preventing paint on a part of a turbine blade, which is not coated previously and not exposed to a high temperature gas stream. SOLUTION: An article to be exposed to a high temperature, for example, >=1000 deg.C during operating is disclosed. In an embodiment, a method for the gas turbine engine includes a directionally crystallized metallic base, for example a superalloy demarcating a blade profile, a blade root and a pedestal arranged between the blade profile and the blade root. The pedestal has an under side adjacent to the root and a corrosion resistant lining coating material such as MCrAlY, an aluminized compound containing a noble metal or a corrosion resistant ceramic is arranged on a part of the blade, for example, the under side of the pedestal and a neck part, where is not coated with the coating material. The applied coating material prevents the corrosion and the stress corrosion cracking of the blade in the region. A coating material for the blade profile coated with the coating material can have a composition different from the coating material applied on the pedestal under surface.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process of forming improved aluminum containing one or more kinds of oxygen activating elements. SOLUTION: A metallic base material is subjected to overlay coating (for example, MCrAL coating) containing >=1 kinds of the oxygen active elements (for example, yttrium, hafnium and silicon) by a general overlay process like low-pressure plasma thermal spraying. Metal (more preferably the transition metal of group VIII, as platinum) is applied by, for example, electroplating onto the base material. The base material is subjected to aluminization by, for example, chemical vapor deposition and is more preferably subjected to heat treatment in succession thereto. Further, thermally insulating ceramics is applied thereto. The aluminide coating containing the active elements having the stable composition and improved durability may be thereby obtained. Such coating may be utilized as the independent type coating and as the bonded coating for the thermally insulation coating to be applied in succession.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To coat the part of a turbine blade, which is not directly exposed to a high temperature gas flow, with a rust preventive paint for improving the durability of its components. SOLUTION: In this invention, e.g. an article to be exposed to a high temperature of >=1,000 deg.C in the process of its operation is disclosed. In one embodiment, the turbine blade for a gas turbine engine contains a directionally crystallized metallic base, e.g. a superalloy demarcating a profile, a root and a stand arranged between the blade and the root. The stand has a lower side adjacent to the root, and a corrosion resistant lining coating material such as MCrAlY is arranged at the lower side and the cervical part of the stand. The applied coating material prevents the corrosion and stress corrosion cracking of the blade in those regions. Moreover, in the place to be coated with the profile, the coating material for the profile may have a composition different from that of the coating material for the lower face of the stand.

SOLUTION: The mask fixture is provided with a locator 10 provided with a vessel 40 surrounding the selected part of the work piece to be masked and a shield 26 for shielding a region selected from the surrounded part not to be in contact with a masking powder. To selectively apply the masking powder on a rout part 70 of a blade for a turbo machine, the rout part 70 of the blade is arranged in the vessel 40, the shield 26 is inserted into the vessel 40 and a boundary is formed between a damper pocket 74 to be coated and an attaching part 72 remaining as it is not coated. The masking powder is introduced into a several sections in the whole sections to surround the attaching part 72 with the masking powder.

Abstract: Novel materials and methods for repairing/reclassifying superalloy components are described herein. These materials are non-traditional blends of materials having a much higher base material content than traditional repair/reclassification materials. In embodiments used to repair/reclassify nickel-based components, these materials may comprise about 5-18.9 weight percent of a low melting point alloy and about 81.1-95 weight percent of a base material. In embodiments used to repair/reclassify cobalt-based components, these materials may comprise about 15-30 weight percent of a low melting point alloy and about 70-85 weight percent of a base material. These materials can be used to repair surface defects and/or build up worn or eroded areas of a component to meet precise dimensional and metallurgical requirements. These materials create robust repaired components having a dense, isothermally solidified structure having minimal borides and a high re-melt temperature.

Abstract: A protective coating system for superalloys is described. The coating is an active element enriched aluminide, and can be formed by aluminizing an overlay coated superalloy, wherein during the aluminizing process, aluminum diffuses completely through the overlay coating and into the substrate. The coating system exhibits desirable oxidation resistance and resistance to thermal fatigue cracking, due to the presence of oxygen active elements in the overlay.
