Abstract:
The invention provides HARDS virus rDNA for expression in molecular clones. The expressed products are useful in immunodiagnostics, prophylactics, and therapeutics for the HARDS virus and related hantaviruses. Of particular interest are a type-specific epitope of the HARDS virus G1 protein, and dominant epitopes of the HARDS virus N protein cross-reactive with antibodies to the HARDS virus and the related hantavirus PHV, both expressed by cDNA clones according to the invention.
Abstract:
Biomodulators, in conjuction with antibodies, tumor-specific agents or conjugates thereof, optionally linked to imaging-active moieties, can be administered to a host to enhance images thereof, e.g., NMR-, X-Ray- or radioimages, preferably by increasing aberrant tissue signal intensity.
Abstract:
beta -alethine is employed in the differentiation and vitalization of cells, for both in vivo and in vitro applications. Particular applications include the use of beta -alethine in the treatment of immune disorders and diseases, treatment of neoplasia, and in the promotion of cell cultures.
Abstract:
A plastic surgical clip comprises a pair of arms (10, 12) having inturned opposing tips (14, 16), the arms being joined by a bridge (26) having a reduced cross-section at its center (32) to provide a locus for bending, when the ears are drawn rearward, while the center of the bridge is supported. A tool for applying the clips has a pair of rearwardly movable grooved jaws (40, 42) astride a central anvil (44) that supports the bridge (26).
Abstract:
A laser gyroscope (30) comprising two ninety degree turning prisms (20, 22) optically connected. A non-reciprocal gain layer structure (24) is grown on the hypotenuse face of one prism (22).
Abstract:
Filtered regenerative feedback is used to modulate a laser or other source of electromagnetic radiation to generate optical pulses whose amplitudes and repetition rates are continuously tunable. The technique involves converting, by means of a photodetector (9), a portion of the radiation produced by a modulatable electromagnetic radiation source (1, 7) into a control signal, filtering the control signal through a bandpass filter (3, 10), and modulating the modulatable radiation source with the filtered control signal to produce pulses. This technique is in principle applicable to any source of electromagnetic radiation and is especially effective for semiconductor diode lasers.
Abstract:
Biomodulators, optionally linked to imaging-active moieties, can be administered to a host to enhance images thereof, e.g., NMR-, X-ray- or radio-images, preferably by increasing aberrant tissue signal intensity. Biomodulators can also condition tissue to enhance uptake of otherwise non-specific imaging agents. When linked to drugs, biomodulators can target the same to particular sites in the body. Biomodulators can be also administered together with an agent such as a drug or an imaging agent (specific or non-specific) structurally modified to take advantage of perturbations of cell oligosaccharide displays caused by biomodulators, to enhance images of a host, e.g., NMR-, X-ray- or radio-images, preferably by increasing aberrant tissue signal intensity. Biomodulators condition tissue to enhance or otherwise modify up-take of the drug or structurally modified agent.
Abstract:
Biomodulators, which regulate cellular differentiation and proliferation, as well as methods of use thereof, e.g., for treating various conditions, e.g., cancer, senescence, immunological disorders and vascular disease; for stimulating normal tissue architecture after injury; for vaccination; for stimulating the production of biologically important molecules by cells or organs in culture; for maintaining organs or tissues outside of a body after removal from the body and prior to transplantation; and for producing vascular grafts for transplantation; are provided.
Abstract:
A forceps for holding and everting vessels in an anastomosis procedure includes three cooperating jaws (32, 34, 36) mounted at the ends of respective relatively movable legs (10, 12, 14). The legs (10, 12, 14) can be independently manipulated in order to secure and evert first one vessel, then another in apposition to the first, so that clips or sutures can be applied to complete the anastomosis.
Abstract:
An improved membrane electrode (11) for measuring the concentration of a non-ionic species in an essentially aqueous medium comprising: an electrically conductive substrate (17); a first coating (13) surrounding said substrate (17) composed of a mixture of polymeric material, an anion exchange material, and a water-insoluble alkaline earth metal salt of said non-ionic species, and a hydrogel coating (15) of material surrounding said first coating (13) having a positive charge of sufficient potential to prevent leaching of the substantial amounts of the alkaline earth metal component of said salt.
