Abstract: Methods and apparatus for logging a wellbore and determining a presence or absence of a hydrocarbon bearing formation are disclosed. A sonde includes a t least two gamma radiation detectors that are utilized for chlorine logging and lifetime logging in combination. Additionally, two detectors of the sonde are spaced axially from each other at different distances from the source to enable determination and compensation for various other parameters such as porosity and water flow velocity. Appropriate gating of the detectors enables sensing total counts of radiation emitted fr om adjacent formations and sensing of specific energy ranges of radiation when the formation is bombarded with energy. Signals from the lifetime logging enable adjustment o f the chlorine logging for a borehole effect and background radiation. The detecto rs can include a sheath of a high capture cross-section material that interacts wit h neutrons to produce gamma radiation to shield the detectors.

Abstract: The present invention generally relates to an apparatus and a method for conveying and operating tools into a wellbore. In one aspect, a method of performing a downhole operation in a wellbore is provided. The method includes pushing a continuous rod into the wellbore, wherein the continuous rod includes a member disposed therein. The method further includes positioning the continuous rod proximate at a predetermined location in the wellbore and performing the downhole operation. In yet another aspect, a system for performing a downhole operation in a wellbore is provided.

Abstract: A continuous rod string 100 is fed into in a deviated wellbore 10 from delivery reel 35. Delivery apparatus 30 provides the insertion force. The delivery apparatus 30 also includes a depth encoder 25 to record the amount of string 100 within the wellbore 10 at any given time thereby determining the position of a tool 110 within the wellbore 10. Data measured and recorded by the downhole tool 110 is then correlated with the depth encoder reading thereby defining the position of the tool 110 in the wellbore 10. This information is then used to form a "log" of measured data as a function of depth within the wellbore 10 at which the data is recorded. A communication line 105, which may be electrical or fibre optic, transmits signals from or to a downhole apparatus 110 such as a logging device or pump.

Two detectors (20,22) are mounted in a spaced-apart vertical relationship within the tool pressure-resistant housing (12). Each detector detects capture gamma radiation across the entire gamma ray energy spectrum, windows are set in this spectrum to separate two distinct energy ranges, thereby generating a total of four independent sets of signals, two for each detector. One set of signals is indicative of the hydrogen content and insensitive to the chlorine content of the irradiated formation. The second set of signals is indicative of the hydrogen plus the chlorine conten t of the irradiated formation. By comparing the sets of signals in two proportional energy ranges, the logging tool allows to generate a log that helps determine the presence or absence of hydrocarbon or salt water in the formation.

Hver detektor detekterer innfangnings-gammastråling over hele gammastrålings-energispekteret, hvor det er fastsatt vinduer i dette spekteret for å separere to distinkte energiområder for å derved genererer totalt fire uavhengige sett med signaler, to for hver detektor. Ett sett med signaler indikerer hydrogeninnholdet og er ufølsomt for klorinnholdet i den bestrålte formasjon. Det annet sett med signaler indikerer hydrogeninnholdet pluss klorinnholdet i den bestrålte formasjon. Ved å sammenligne signalsettene ved to proporsjonale energiområder, gjør loggesonden det mulig å generere en logg som bidrar til å bestemme forekomsten eller fraværet av hydrokarboner eller saltvann i formasjonen.
