Abstract: A mailboxing system for receiving and stacking a plurality of print jobs (11,11a,11b) for a plurality of different recipients in plurality of mailbox bins. Each bin (11,11a,11b) may have a preset maximum sheet stacking capacity. A stapler system is provided for selectively stapling together the print jobs. A sheet distribution system (16) controlled by a control system (100) automatically directs and stacks into selected mailbox bins the respective print jobs of different recipients. A bin stacking level estimation system (50) provides an indication of the height of the stack in the mailbox bin, and includes a point count correction system having a counting subsystem for accumulating a point count of the number of sheets directed to a selected mailbox bin (11,11a,11b), a sheet thickness correction factor subsystem providing correction factors for differing sheet thicknesses, and a staple buildup factor input subsystem for providing correction factors to the point count for the number of stapled sets of job sheets being so directed. The point count correction system automatically corrects the point count with the sheet thicknesses and the staple buildup correction factors to more accurately estimate the stack height of the total stack of sheets to be stacked in the selected mailbox bin (11,11a,11b).

Abstract: A sheet stacking system is described herein which comprises an array of sheet stacking bins (11, 11a, 11b) for stacking a plurality of printed substrate sheets, a sheet feeding input path system for feeding selected sheets into a selected bin (11, 11a, 11b) to form a stack (51) therein, a bin fullness indicator system for indicating that the stack (51) has reached a preset allowable maximum, and a stacking control system (50), controlled by the bin fullness indicator system, to control the sheet feeding input path. The bin fullness indicator system includes a single stack height sensing system for measuring the stack height. A movable carriage system is employed for moving this single stack height sensing system from one bin to another to measure the stack height in respective ones of the bins (11, 11a, 11b). The stack height sensor includes a movable sensing element which is extended into an adjacent bin to detect the stack height therein. A signal generator is responsive to the sensing element position to provide control signals for the stacking control system.

Abstract: The duplex path loop (100) has an acceleration nip cooperating with a belt transport and re-time nip to allow duplexing of sheets while minimising skipped pitches on the photoreceptor. As each sheet to be duplex printed is removed from the process path after first side imaging, the path is accelerated to create a gap between it and subsequent sheets. The sheet is then stalled or slowed in a re-time nip, while subsequent sheets to be duplexed are simultaneously driven by the same transport, the first mentioned sheet being reinserted into the process path at the proper time for receiving the second side image before the arrival of the second sheet at the re-time nip. Subsequent duplex sheets are handled in the same manner so that duplex copies are interleaved or otherwise reinserted into the process path with first side copies so that skipped pitches on the photoreceptor are minimised.
