Abstract: A sheet stacking system is described herein which comprises an array of sheet stacking bins (11, 11a, 11b) for stacking a plurality of printed substrate sheets, a sheet feeding input path system for feeding selected sheets into a selected bin (11, 11a, 11b) to form a stack (51) therein, a bin fullness indicator system for indicating that the stack (51) has reached a preset allowable maximum, and a stacking control system (50), controlled by the bin fullness indicator system, to control the sheet feeding input path. The bin fullness indicator system includes a single stack height sensing system for measuring the stack height. A movable carriage system is employed for moving this single stack height sensing system from one bin to another to measure the stack height in respective ones of the bins (11, 11a, 11b). The stack height sensor includes a movable sensing element which is extended into an adjacent bin to detect the stack height therein. A signal generator is responsive to the sensing element position to provide control signals for the stacking control system.

Abstract: A sheet buffering system for use in a copier or printer producing a sequential stream of sheets with limited time therebetween, and with compiling and finishing of those output sheets on-line while subsequent sheets are being printed, a non-slip sheet feeder (16a,95) normally feeding copy sheets downstream to the compiler is selectably intermittently temporarily stopped holding the lead edge area of the first copy sheet (18) for the next set to be finished so that continued feeding of the trail end of the same sheet by a relatively closely spaced upstream feeder(22a) buckles that sheet into a buckle chamber (30) assisted by a buckle inducing arcuate baffle (13a,14a,14b) extending from the other side of the sheet path. The next printed sheet is fed normally while the buckled first sheet (18) is positively held out of its way. When the second sheet (20) reaches the downstream feeder (16a), it restarts to positively feed both sheets downstream to the compiler, together, but overlapped by a preset amount for registration stacking. A substantial increase is provided in the time for the preceding copy sheets to be operated on in the compiler. A plural sheet collection point may also be provided by this sheet buffering system.

Abstract: A method of sheet buffering with a sheet buffering apparatus that includes at least one pair of stationary spaced apart curvlinear guide members (26,28) defining a sheet travel path (P), and a first paper nip (20) downstream of the at least one pair of stationary spaced apart curvlinear guide members (26,28) in the sheet travel path (P), the method comprising: feeding the leading edge of a first sheet (S1) into said first paper feeding nip (20); moving the trailing edge of said first sheet (S1) laterally off of said sheet travel path; and urging a leading edge of a second sheet (S2) into said pair of spaced apart guide members (26,28) and along said sheet travel path (P) lapping the trailing edge of said first sheet (S1).

Abstract: A sheet output module for the collection and stacking of printed media sheets from the output of a reproduction apparatus, with multiple separate sheet collection bins (11) in a vertical array, a sheet input for receiving the sheets, and a sheet transport path for transporting the sheets to a selected bin; the sheet input is at a central vertical level intermediately of the module and the vertical bin array, the vertical bin array is divided into first and second portions with a central vertical space therebetween, the sheet transport path has a common shared central path (12a) from the input to a branching position where it arcuately branches in opposite directions, with a first branch path (12b) extending upwardly to feed sheets to the first portion of the bins and a second branch path (12c) extending downwardly to feed sheets to the second portion of the bins. A sheet deflector gate (14) is located at this branching position for selectively deflecting sheets from a the common shared path portion into one of these first and second branch paths. A high capacity stacking tray (17) is located within this vertical space between the first and second portions of the vertical array of bins.
