Abstract: A belt drive module and a corresponding method includes or employs a belt (10) that moves along a path, at least one support roller (12) or other structure that supports the belt as it moves along the path, a drive roller (11) that effects movement of the belt along the path, a tension roller (74) that applies a tension force to the belt in order to maintain engagement of the belt with the drive and/or support rollers, at least one processing station (e.g., an image processing station) disposed along the path that performs a process relative to a predetermined position of the belt, and a torque assist drive that applies a torque assist force (Td) at a location between the drive roller and the tension roller. Torque assist may be provided by a current limited DC motor or by a constant torque friction clutch applied to a roller (66), e.g., a stripper roller of an electrophotographic imaging system. Advantageously, the torque assist force (Td) facilitates accurate positioning of the belt (e.g., latent image registrations in a color imaging process employing multiple imaging processing stations) by reducing slippage between the drive roller and the belt that may be encountered due to belt wear, toner contamination and/or other debris.

Abstract: A sheet path velocity profile signature analysis apparatus which utilizes output from various idler rolls (82) throughout the machine paper path to detect abnormalities. The idler rolls (82) are in frictional contact with device rolls (84) defining therewith a nip through which individual sheets pass. The idler rolls (82) are coupled to an encoder (86) for generating a signal as a function of the rotational speed of the idler rolls (82). The constantly monitored and instantaneous velocity readings are compared with a base line velocity signature established at the factory. If the constantly monitored velocity profile is not within the pre-established operating parameters as set at the factory, automatic machine adjustment procedures are initiated and/or automatic service alerts are issued. The ability to constantly monitor the velocity profile throughout the machine enables preventative maintenance to occur and worn drive rolls, idler rolls and other transport devices can be replaced before catastrophic failure.

Abstract: An apparatus for maintaining a uniform temperature along its axis by increasing the heat transfer efficiency. The apparatus uses a sealed chamber containing a substantially pure working fluid in a two phase (liquid and vapor) condition. The vaporization and condensation of the fluid increases the heat transfer efficiency and tends to equalize temperature gradients in a body in contact with the apparatus. The apparatus is utilized in various locations in an electrophotographic printing machine and can be used as a pressure roll for a heat and pressure fuser, a support or drive roll for a photoreceptive member, a support member for a photoreceptor and a heat sink for a developer housing.

Abstract: A document handling system particularly suitable for electronic imaging by sequentially feeding uppermost document sheets (18) stacked in an input tray (20) to be imaged in forward serial order at an imaging station (16) and restacked collated in an output tray (22), with a short and compact "U" shaped common document feeding path also providing the majority of a duplex document feeding path (24) for returning duplex document sheets imaged on their first sides back to the imaging station for imaging their second sides. The input and output trays are in a space saving closely superposed relationship defining a protective confining inverter chute space therebetween within which the duplex document sheets may be fed out over the output tray by a dual mode reversible output sheet feeder at the "U" shaped path output and then reversed to feed back through a short linear duplex document feeding path into the entrance of the same "U" shaped document sheet feeding path for simplex document sheets to provide a duplex loop path.

Abstract: A method and system for repositioning a mark (105,110) on a belt (100) after an image on paper registration process, which includes printing a test pattern, measuring at least one test pattern parameter, detecting a mark on the belt and detecting at least one imaging error associated therewith, using the at least one test pattern parameter and the at least one imaging error to determine the lateral distance required to shift a particular image to a desired location (115,120) on the belt, and shifting the image to the desired location.

Abstract: A single pass, multi-color electrophotographic printing machine architecture uses a vertically oriented photoconductive belt. Transfer of th e toner powder images occur at the lowermost portion of the photoconductive belt. The photoconductive belt is elliptically shaped, having a major and a minor axis. N image recording stations are positioned adjacent an exterior surface of the photoconductive belt on one side of the major axis thereof. N -1 image recording stations are positioned adjacent the exterior surface of the photoconductive belt on the other side of the major axis thereof. The image recording stations record electrostatic latent images on the photoconductive belt. This architecture optimizes image registration while minimizing the overall height of the printing machine.

Abstract: A copy machine includes a photoreceptor (10) for storing a document image, a transfer station (D) for transferring a stored document image to a sheet of copy paper at a transfer location, a supply tray (33) for storing a quantity of copy sheets (31), transport rollers (17, 19) for conveying copy sheets along a path from the supply tray to the transfer location, a detector (40) for detecting a misfeed in the path and for outputting a misfeed signal, and a controller (82) for preventing an image on the photoreceptor from entering the transfer location upon receipt of the misfeed signal. Transfer of the document image from the photoreceptor to a copy sheet takes place after the misfeed has cleared.
