    Abstract: A mixing device, includes three rows (71, 72, 73) of chambers, with the chambers, (e.g. 81,82) of each row alternately diverting the particulate material, dropping under gravity through the device, to the left or to the right by the use of an exit aperture (90, 91) at the bottom of each chamber (81, 82) which is displaced to the left or to the right from a position vertically below the mouth (116, 104) of the chamber at the top of the device. The mouth and exit apertures of the chambers of different rows are aligned in such a fashion that on recirculation of at least part of the material by vertical movement thereof from the bottom of the device to the top for a further passage through the device, there is simultaneous movement of material from left to right and from row to row, and from right to left and from row to row. The mixing device comprises two inter-fitting castings, each having vanes (83, 84, 84) projecting from a dividing plate (75, 77), the dividing plates separating the rows, and the vanes defining the chambers.

    Abstract: Electrostatographic development apparatus comprises two magnetic brush rolls (41, 42) both adapted to develop an electrostatic latent image on the surface of a photoreceptor drum (1). The two developer rolls (41, 42) are mounted one above the other for rotation in opposite senses (54, 55) so as to feed developer material between them towards the photoreceptor surface. A third magnetic brush roll (43) acts as a transport roll, to carry developer material into a cross-mixing arrangement (44) through which the developer material drops for mixing and recirculation. The developer material which is fed between the two developer rolls (41, 42) is split magnetically by the arrangements of stationary magnetic poles in magnets (51, 52) within the developer rolls so that the developer material is split into two streams of the desired proportions for optimum development of the electrostatic latent image.

    Abstract: A cylindrical magnet for a magnetic brush developer unit used in an electrophotographic printing machine is of U-shaped cross section having a cylindrical outer surface, and a cavity through which extends the rotary axis of the sleeve. The material forming the magnet is a moldable plastic containing a comminuted ferrite. The longitudinal, angularly spaced, poles are produced in the material during the molding operation. The magnetic body is bonded to end support members, and it is self-supporting between them.

    Abstract: A mixing device, of the kind known as a cross-mixer for particulate material. The device includes three rows (71, 72, 73) of chambers, with the chambers (e.g. 81, 82) of each row alternately diverting the particulate material, dropping under gravity through the device, to the left or to the right by the use of an exit aperture (90, 91) at the bottom of each chamber (81, 82) which is displaced to the left or to the right from a position vertically below the mouth (116, 104) of the chamber at the top of the device. The mouth and exit apertures of the chambers of different rows are aligned in such a fashion that on successive recirculations of an elemental volume of the material through the device there is systematic movement thereof from end to end of the device, with simultaneous movement of material from left to right and from row to row, and from right to left and from row to row. The mixing device, which in use is completely submerged in the particulate material comprises two inter-fitting castings, each having vanes (83, 84, 84) projecting from a dividing plate (77), the dividing plates separating the rows, and the vanes defining the chambers.

The developer rolls (41, 42) are mounted one above the other for rotation in opposite senses (54, 55) so as to feed developer material between them towards the photo receptor surface. A third magnetic brush roll (43), which is a transport roll, is mounted above the upper developer roll (41) to carry the developer material upwards away from the upper developer roll, and to release the developer material onto the top of a passive cross-mixer (44) for mixing and recirculation under gravity to the lower developer roll (42).

    Abstract: An electrostatographic copier has a process unit (1) removably mounted in a main assembly of an electrostatographic reproducing machine, the process unit including a development apparatus (4) at which an electrostatic latent image is developed on an imaging member (3), and a transfer device (7) which causes a developed toner image to be transferred from the moving imaging member to a copy sheet. The development apparatus (4) is contained within a housing (27) of an electrically insulating material, and comprises conductive area adjacent the exit portion (26) of the development apparatus, i.e. the portion from which the imaging member emerges as it moves towards the transfer device. The conductive area includes a conductive coating on the exit portion (26) of the developer housing, and a conductive seal member (28) through which an electrical discharge path is provided. This reduces the tendency of debris to accumulate in the region of the exit portion, and prevents any debris which does accumulate from building up a charge (which would have detrimental effects on the developed image).
