Abstract: A process unit (1) which can be removably mounted in a main assembly (100) of a reproducing machine such as a xerographic copier. The unit comprises a housing (2) enclosing an imaging member (3) and, optionally, other processing means such as a development device (4), a cleaner (5), and a charge corotron (6). The unit also comprises an integral transfer corotron (7) which has one end (21) hingedly mounted on the housing enabling the corotron to be pivoted open for jam clearance. Preferably, the end (22) of the corotron remote from the pivoted end (21) is retained in the unit by a latch (26) which is opened automatically to release the corotron when the unit is inserted into the main assembly. A flexure (49) within the main assembly normally urges the corotron to its operative position when the unit is inserted in the main assembly, but the flexure may be withdrawn so that the corotron pivots open about its hinged end (21) to permit jam clearance. When the unit is withdrawn from the main assembly the corotron is automatically latched back into the unit housing.

Abstract: A dispensing cartridge 2 which is particularly, although not exclusively, useful as a toner dispensing cartridge for an electrophotographic copying machine comprises a housing (4) including inner and outer tubular members 6, 8, the inner member 6 being concentrically mounted within the outer member 8 for relative rotation therewith, each member 6, Shaving a respective port 14, 16, the ports being arranged to align up with one another, upon relative rotation between the members 6, 8, to define the exit aperture through which the material may be dispensed. The tubular members which may be plastics or cardboard, are preferably arranged in sliding contact, with sealing material provided on one of the contacting surfaces. Locking means may be provided to prevent relative movement of the tubular members, the locking means being released on co-operation with means associated with the device into which the cartridge is inserted. The outer tubular member 8 is mounted on a wedge shaped flange 26, 28, 30, the flange being mountable in a cover (32, Figure 8), itself mountable on brackets (44, Figure 8) of a toner sump 13.

Abstract: Apparatus for separating residual toner material from the surface of a reusable photoreceptor (3) in a reproducing machine has a cleaner blade assembly (1) comprising a cleaner blade (5) in a holder (6). The cleaner blade assembly is movable between two positions. In a first position (see Fig. 2) the blade (5) operatively engages the photoreceptor to clean off the residual toner material which is then collected in a generally enclosed chamber (16) below. In the second position (see Fig. 3) the blade assembly is spaced apart from the photoreceptor but covers the entrance to the chamber forming a sealed enclosure for the contents. Thus the toner collecting chamber is sealed by the cleaner blade alone without relying on the photoreceptor to perform a sealing function which makes the apparatus particularly suitable for use in a process cassette comprising at least a photoreceptor and, optionally, other process elements wherein the photoreceptor cannot seal the chamber because it is only loosely retained when the cassette is not in the working position in the machine.

Abstract: A process unit which is removably mounted in the main assembly of a reproducing machine such as a xerographic copier, has a housing enclosing an imaging member and, optionally, other processing capability such as a development device, and a cleaner. The unit also has two charging devices, namely a charge scoroton and a transfer corotron which are mounted so as to have a limited degree of vertical movement relative to the unit housing. The charging devices are provided with spacers at their opposite ends which abut a support member in the main assembly when the process unit is inserted therein. In this way the charging devices are automatically accurately located relative to the imaging member when the process unit is inserted in its operative position in the main assembly. Preferably the charging devices are urged towards the support by springs which, in the case of the charge scorotron are included within the cassette housing and, in the case of the transfer corotron form part of the main assembly of the copier.

Abstract: Electrostatographic development apparatus comprises two magnetic brush rolls (41, 42) both adapted to develop an electrostatic latent image on the surface of a photoreceptor drum (1). The developer rolls (41, 42) are mounted one above the other for rotation in opposite senses (54, 55) so as to feed developer material between them towards the photo receptor surface. A third magnetic brush roll (43), which is a transport roll, is mounted above the upper developer roll (41) to carry the developer material upwards away from the upper developer roll, and to release the developer material onto the top of a passive cross-mixer (44) for mixing and recirculation under gravity to the lower developer roll (42).

The conveying means typically includes a flexible helical wire (20) which acts as an auger. Once filled with waste toner, the waste toner container (30) is removed from the drum (10) and is replaced by a fresh container.
