    Abstract: The invention is an electric paper sheet that uses a pattern of conductive charge-retaining islands on the outward-facing side of the first of two thin layers used to encapsulate a Gyricon sheet. The second encapsulating layer may also coated with a conductive material, or made of a conductive material, and may or may not be patterned. The Gyricon sheet and two encapsulating layers comprise a sheet of Gyricon electric paper on which images can be written and erased repeatedly. The patterned charge-retaining islands of the first encapsulating layer receive electric charges from an external charge-transfer device. After the charge-transfer device is removed, the conductive, charge-retaining islands hold electric charge, creating an electric field in the electric paper sufficient to cause an image change.

    Abstract: An apparatus for fabricating hemispherically bichromal balls, comprising a separator member having opposing first and second surfaces located and an edge region in contact with both surfaces, and delivery means for flowing first and second colored hardenable liquid material over the first and second surfaces, respectively, so that the liquid materials arrive at the edge at substantially the same flow rate and form a reservoir outboard of the edge region. The reservoir comprises side-by-side regions of different colors which do not intermix. Further means is provided for propelling the first and second liquid materials away from the separator member and out of the reservoir into a fluid medium as a plurality of side-by-side bichromal streams whose forward ends become unstable ant break up into droplets which form into spherical balls, each of the balls comprising hemispheres of differently colored hardenable liquid, and means for collecting the bichromal balls.

    Abstract: A receiver for a direct sequence spread-spectrum communication system of the type in which a transmitter mixes a clocked pseudo-random sequence with a modulated carrier for spreading the carrier energy across a wide band of frequencies, comprises a resident clock-driven pseudo-random code generator for locally generating an essentially identical, spectrum despreading code sequence; means for clocking the resident code generator at a nominal frequency which is offset in a predetermined sense from the clock frequency of the transmitted code sequence such that the phase of the locally generated code sequence tends to slide in one direction with respect to the phase of the transmitted code sequence; detection means for determining whether the the locally generated and the transmitted code sequence are phase aligned or misaligned and for sensing their actual, incipient and/or predicted departures from a phase aligned state, and phase control means for adjusting the clock frequency for the resident code generator whenever such a departure is sensed, thereby shifting the phase of the locally generated code sequencein the opposite direction with respect to the transmitted code sequence by an amount which tends to restore the two code sequences to a phase aligned state. In other words, in keeping with this invention, the receiver has a sliding correlator for phase correlating its locally generated code sequence with the transmitted code sequence at the outset of each incoming transmission, together with a phase controller for regulating the rate at which its resident code generator is clocked once such phase correlation has been achieved, whereby the resident code generator of the phase correlated receiver is clocked at substantially the same average frequency as the transmitted code sequence for the balance of the transmission.

    Abstract: A bichromal ball (12) includes a first hemisphere (14). The first hemisphere (14) includes a first pigment having a first color and a first polarity. The first pigment is added to the carrier fluid and polymer mixture during formation of the bichromal balls. A second hemisphere (16) includes a second pigment having a second color and a second polarity. The second pigment is added to the carrier fluid and polymer mixture during formation of the bichromal balls. The carrier fluid and polymer mixture have a lower viscosity than the polymer alone and so more easily form reasonably uniform small sized droplets (44). The carrier fluid is substantially removed from the droplets (44) after the first and second hemispheres (14,16) are formed. The polymer is left along with the first and second pigments which form the bichromal ball (12). A diameter of the bichromal ball is reduced by the substantially removing the carrier fluid.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus which laterally focusses aqueous ink drops onto a substrate, using electric fields. The drops are not charged, and focusing results from the forces on the uncharged dielectric drop that occur in a nonuniform electric field. It is shown that initial lateral velocity misdirection of the drops is corrected using electric fields. Lateral velocities which would produce drop displacements of -50 mu m from their intended positions, at a height of 1mm above the ink surface, may be corrected to produce displacements of less than 2.5 mu m.

    Abstract: An apparatus for fabricating bichromal balls includes a means for fabricating droplets from electrically conductive hardenable liquids. The liquids have different colors. A forward end of the hardenable liquids becomes unstable and breaks up into the droplets. Each droplet includes hemispheres of different colors. An RF signal generator produces electrical pulses which increase the instability of the forward end of the hardenable liquids. A capacitance in the conductive liquids causes current to flow from the signal generator to the hardenable liquids. A diameter of the droplets is reduced to form substantially spherical balls. Each of the balls includes hemispheres of different colors. The bichromal balls are collected.
