Abstract: A fluid ejection system according to this invention operates on the principle of electrostatic or magnetic attraction. In various exemplary embodiments, the fluid ejection system includes a sealed diaphragm arrangement having at least one diaphragm portion and a diaphragm chamber defined at least partially by the at least one diaphragm portion, a nozzle hole located over the at least one diaphragm portion, an ejection chamber defined between the nozzle hole and the least one diaphragm portion and a secondary dielectric fluid reservoir containing a secondary dielectric fluid. The ejection chamber receives a primary fluid to be ejected. The secondary dielectric fluid reservoir is in fluid communication with the diaphragm chamber to supply the secondary dielectric fluid to the diaphragm chamber. In various exemplary embodiments, the secondary dielectric fluid is a liquid, a substantially incompressible fluid, and/or a high performance dielectric fluid having a dielectric constant greater than 1.

Abstract: Disclosed is a hybrid copying system for copying documents in desired non-linear page sequences for improved copying efficiency, particularly for duplex copying. Documents from a stacked set of documents are fed to the copying station of a copier and then selectively returned directly back to the opposite side of the copying station for copying interleaved between the feeding of other documents fed from stack, by a document return path (72,74) bypassing the stack and having a path length greater than the dimension of a document sheet. At least one document which has been copied on one side may be moving in this return path while another fed from the stack is being copied, and may also be inverted by an integral inverter (70) in the return path. For pre-collation copying this document return path may be coordinated with otherwise normal recirculation of the documents to and from the stack in an integrated but partially different recirculation path (72,73). Coordinated copy sheet duplexing systems are provided for improved efficiency duplex copying, preferably comprising a trayless duplexing buffer path (55,38) for circulating copy sheets from and back to the image transfer station (17) of the copier to eliminate intermediate copy sheet stacking and refeeding between first and second side copying. Various examples are provided for hybrid simplex and/or duplex and pre or post collation copying, including coordinated sorter operation.

Abstract: A copier capable of producing simplex and duplex copies includes a tri-roll inverter that employs a ball on roll return force applicator located downstream from the tri-roll input/output members. A sheet coming into the inverter is driven by a pair of the tri-rolls into a nip formed between the ball and roll of the return force applicator. The roll which has a minimal friction force is rotated continuously in the opposite direction to the incoming sheet. When the last portion of the sheet is driven into the ball on roll nip, the friction force of the nip will cause the sheet to buckle into an output nip of the tri-roll members for outward movement.

Abstract: An apparatus and method to deskew sheets in a short paper path in an electrophotographic printing machine by differentially driving two sets of rolls so as to create a paper buckle buffer zone in the sheet and then differentially driving a roll set to correct the skew while the sheet is still within the nips of multiple drive roll sets. Contrary to stalled roll techniques, leading edge damage to sheets is eliminated as the deskewing rolls are initially traveling at the same velocity as the sheet.

Abstract: EMBODIMENT In a document handler in which simplex or duplex document sheets are fed from a document tray overlying the copier platen of a copier to one side of the platen, with a single inversion and a document side edge registration and deskewing system in the simplex path; a unidirectional, continuous loop, but non-circular duplex document inversion path integral with and partially in common with the simplex path is provided at the same side of the platen. This duplex path has first and second inverting path segments separate from the simplex path, and a third path segment utilizing the simplex path. Duplex documents to be inverted are fed into the first path segment, which extends up from the platen outside of the simplex path and on through the second path segment to connect with the simplex path upstream of the side edge registration system and passing through the single inversion in the simplex path so that duplex documents being inverted are returned to the platen inverted from their previous orientation after re-registration by the same document side edge registration system as is used for simplex documents. A self-actuating platen edge guide, and two RDH modification versions, are also disclosed.

A compact and selectively actuable disc stacker is included that is adapted when in one position to receive and invert documents directed toward the feed and refeed tray and when in another position allows the documents to pass thereover without inversion, as well as, corrugation nips that corrugates documents passing therethrough toward the refeed tray.

Abstract: Sheet-feeding apparatus with a sheet support tray (10), a rear vacuum plenum chamber (19) adapted to acquire the rear portion of a sheet, a front vacuum plenum chamber (18) positioned over the front of the tray and adapted to acquire the front portion of a sheet, a sheet transport (27) associated with the front vacuum plenum to transport a sheet acquired in a forward direction, and an air knife (29) positioned at the rear of the stack of sheets to inject air between the trail edge of the top sheet in a stack and the remainder of the stack. The trail edge of a sheet in a stack is separated by the air knife, acquired by the rear vacuum plenum then acquired by the front vacuum plenum and transported in a forward direction. As the trailing edge clears the rear plenum, the rear plenum, which together with the air knife is continuously actuated, acquires the next sheet in the stack. In this way, the speed of the sheet feeder can be very high, since sheets are separated and acquired by the feeder simultaneously with transporting them off the stack. Preferably, the air knife includes preacquisition fluffer jets to loosen the top few sheets in the stack initially and lateral converging air streams to facilitate separation of the topmost sheet in the stack. The front vacuum plenum includes sheet acquisition tunnels over virtually its entire sheet contact surface in order to accommodate a wide variety of sheet sizes.
