    Abstract: A method to provide a highly intelligent, automated diagnostic system that identifies the need to replace specific parts to minimize machine downtime rather than require extensive service troubleshooting. In particular, a systematic, logical test analysis scheme to assess machine operation from a simple sensor system and to be able to pinpoint parts and components needing replacement is provided by a series of first level of tests by the control to monitor components for receiving a first level of data and by a series of second level of tests by the control to monitor components for receiving a second level of data. Each of the first level tests and first level data is capable of identifying a first level of part failure independent of any other test. Each of the second level tests and second level data is a combination of first level tests and first level data or a combination of a first level test and first level data and a third level test and third level data. The second level tests and second level data are capable of identifying second and third levels of part failure. Codes are stored and displayed to manifest specific part failures.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided to calibrate a xerographic print engine toner concentration sensor (32) to accurately control the toner concentration defined as the ratio of weight of toner and the weight of the overall developing agent in a two-component developing agent to a specified operating target. At least two control patches are imaged onto a photoreceptor (10). Each patch has a different voltage level (VemLo,VemHi) where the voltage levels are the difference between the exposure discharge voltage (VeLo,VeHi) and the developmental roll voltage (VD). The relative reflectivity of each patches is obtained. The latent patches are repeatedly developed at different toner concentrations. The reflectivities of the patches formed at the same toner concentration are combined to obtain a combined reflectivity for that toner concentration. As a result, a toner concentration curve is obtained that has an improved response relative to the toner concentration curves that correspond to each of the individual voltage levels.

    Abstract: A system for measuring the friction between the bottom two sheets of the stack (7). The bottom-most sheet is held to a vacuum corrugation feeder tray (5) by any suitable means such as a vacuum (41) and moves with the tray. The vacuum corrugation feeder tray (5) is mounted on compliant supports (80) and driven near or at its resonant frequency by an electromechanical driver (82). At low or zero pressure from an air knife (12), the paper stack is mechanically coupled to the tray and moves with the tray, possibly slipping at some point during the vibration cycle. As the air knife pressure increases, the mechanical coupling decreases, and a point is reached at which the stack remains stationary. Prior to the point where stack motion ceases, the resonance of the tray is modified and it is possible to estimate the weight of the stack. When the stack motion ceases, the frictional force F can be estimated from the driving force required to maintain a given vibrational amplitude. From the driving force required to maintain a given vibrational amplitude and the mass of the tray or stack, it is possible to calculate the coefficient of friction between the bottom two sheets. The coefficient of friction is then used to control the amount of air pressure from the air knife until an optimum coefficient of friction is achieved.
