    Abstract: PURPOSE: To prevent the damage without degrading a strength member by protecting a photoconductor from stresses in the lengthwise direction and the transverse direction applied to the strength member and roughing the surface of the strength member by forming marks on the surface of the strength member to improve the grip between a sheath and the strength member. CONSTITUTION: A homogeneous noncoductive rod 1 made of glass fiber reinforced resin has a rectangular slot 2 having projecting curve edges 2A and 2B, and an optical fiber ribbon element 3 is included in the slot 2. The rod 1 functions as a cable strength member and a cable sheath and has a rough face 1A to enhance adhesion between a sheath 7 and the rod 1, and a binder 6 is spirally provided so that most of the face 1A of the rod 1 comes into direct contact with the sheath 7. The constitution of the rough face 1A has molding dimples made by a woven tape placed on the outside of the rod during production, and the surface of the rod is stamped with the shape of the woven tape. Thus, a photoconductor is stored, and the damage due to treatment of degradation particles on the face is prevented.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a smart pixel having electric signal processing and state setting functions by adding a prescribed electronic circuit, which is cooperated with a chiral smectic liquid crystal optical modulator, to this optical modulator on a semiconductor substrate. CONSTITUTION: Chiral smectic liquid crystal optical modulators 10 to 12 are formed on a semiconductor substrate 1, and a storage register 13 and a switch resistance network (or a digital/analog converter DAC) 14 which are cooperated with them are formed in the vicinity of them, and a liquid crystal driving signal is applied to the network 14, and these electronic circuits 13 and 14 are formed by a silicon VLSI technique. Smart pixels made locally intelligent in this manner are arranged as prescribed to form a circuit, and an input optical signal and an electric signal are inputted to this circuit, and prescribed optical logical operation or the like is performed, thereby realizing a composite of circuits in the highest level different from conventional.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To make it possible to withstand against a load in the direction of a shaft, which is given on a cable during laying/restoring work, by permitting the trailing end of a king wire to move in the direction of the shaft so as to prevent compression force from being given to the king wire in a joint and near an optical fiber package when an abysmal pressure acts on the jointed cable. CONSTITUTION: A sea-case acts as a pressure proof casing and an tensile strengtta material. A pair of half shells or liners in the sea-case support partitions 9 and 19 at opposite end parts. The two partitions 19 are held by holding nuts 21 against split liners 2A and 2B and the respective partitions have annular recessed parts 19A with which the liners are engaged. The nuts 21 are screwed to an internal screw end part 18A in the sea-case 18. A pressure pipe T and a package P are sandwiched between an upper clump part 20 and a lower clump part 4, which are fixed to the respective partitions 19 by a screw 24 in a joint casing. The fiber package P has a 'built out' pipe whose external diameter is applied to be similar to the pressure pipe T. Thus, the damage or the subtle bending loss of the fibers in the package can be prevented.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide an effective method for laying and embedding a cable in shallow waters at low cost by using a ship like a cargo ship to be temporarily converted for cable laying so that a container, a laying machine, a control and arranging apparatus are attachable/detachable to/from the ship, and recyclable. CONSTITUTION: A ship 1 is temporarily converted for cable laying by providing an accommodation and a power module 3, a cable laying engine, a cable embedding machine 4, a side thruster 5, and a hawser winch for the embedding machine. A dancing sheave 7 supported by an existing jib 8 on the ship 1 is provided for cargo transfer, and two holds 2A, 2B are provided. The power and accommodation module 3 comprises an upper accommodation division including bed rooms, bath rooms, dining rooms, and toilets, and a lower power division including generators, air compressors, and hydraulic power sources, and the control system controls the devices.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To detect the position of the failure of a repeating communication cable containing the surge protective device of a repeater by measuring the resistance of the cable by setting the protective device in a conducting state in a lowresistance state by eliminating normal power supply from the end of the cable. CONSTITUTION: The resistance of a repeating communication cable is measured at the terminal of an electrical conductor in the cable by effectively setting the surge protective device of a repeater in a conducting state in a low- resistance state by eliminating normal power supply from the end of the cable and impressing a current modulated to the electrical conductor at a terminal having a polarity and amplitude sufficient to reduce the effect of the polarity when a failure occurs. Therefore, the position of the failure of the cable including the surge protective device can be detected.
