Abstract: 1308598 Ionization gas detectors NAUCHNOISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT SINTETICHESKIKH SPIRTOV I ORGANICHESKIKH PRODUKTOV 7 April 1971 8929/71 Heading G1N [Also in Division H1] In an ionization gas detector, e.g. for use in chromatography, ionized gas particles are caused to oscillate between the electrodes 9, 10, without contacting the electrodes, so that, since each ionized particle performs several oscillations, the measured current is larger than the normal saturation current of the present device, and, since the electrodes may be completely insulated (insulator 7) corrosive substances may be reliably analysed. The amplitude A of oscillations is chosen to satisfy A # l/4 = #/4#f where l represents the electrode spacing, v represents the drift velocity of the ionized particles, and f represents the frequency of the applied electric field. However, when the electrodes are insulated, the amplitude may exceed 4 provide the ionized gas particles are caused to oscillate for at least a period T>l/2#. As shown, the gas fed, via conduit 4, is ionised by a hydrogen flame at 6, the electrode 9, is being connected to an alternating voltage source (not shown), and being insulated from the interelectrode space.

Abstract: An ultraviolet sensitive, gaseous discharge detector of the Geiger-Muller type has a low spurious count rate and a prolonged lifetime at elevated temperatures. The gas filling of the detector comprises a gas mixture of neon and argon with a small amount of hydrogen added. The gas mixture of neon and argon substantially determines the breakdown voltage and ionization efficiency characteristics of the gas filling. The essential function of the hydrogen is to rapidly de-excite argon metastable atoms which would otherwise cause excessive spurious discharge counts.
