Abstract: A variable oscillator, suitable for integration as part of a phase lock loop (PLL) clock source in a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) integrated circuit, includes an amplifier and terminals for connection to a a tank circuit, for example a crystal resonator. A passive reactance is alternately coupled and decoupled in relation to the amplifier to cause oscillatory operation at lower and higher frequencies. In the CMOS circuit the reactance is conveniently provided by conductive layers of predetermined dimensions being carried by an oxide layer. Each layer provides a capacitive reactance which is arranged in series with a field effect defice being controlled by associated PLL control circuitry.

Abstract: The invention relates to a crystal controllable oscillator circuit. The oscillator includes an amplifier and an oscillation sustaining feed-back loop coupled between an output and an input of the amplifier the loop including two integrators in series for inhibiting oscillation at crystal overtones. Each integrator provides 90° phase shift independently of the oscillators defining RC product which determines only the gain thereby making the oscillator less sensitive to variations in circuit time constants due to temperature and manufacturing tolerance effects. The invention is particularly suitable for incorporating in integrated circuit form where only a single pin connection is required for the controlling cyrstal.

Abstract: A crystal oscillator circuit (5) for use with overtone crystals (70) restricts its resonant frequency to either fundamental or overtone frequencies. An inverting amplifier (10), which provides 180 degrees of phase shift by inverting an input signal, includes components which effectively provide another 180 degree phase shift at a particular frequency by adding a time delay. The 180 degree phase shift by a signal inverting amplifier, with the included 180 degree phase shift provided by the time delay comprises an oscillator by the addition of a crystal with a resonant frequency equal to the time of a 180 degree time period for the signal. Suppression of unwanted oscillation frequencies is accomplished by adjusting a current source (20), which changes time delay, without using inductors or other reactive components.
